Purple Eagles celebrate with ’79 title trophy
Contributed Photos – Albion’s Homecoming celebration this past Friday night featured the honoring of the Purple Eagles 1979 team which captured the inaugural Section VI championship with a 13-12 win over Springville at Rich Stadium (now New Era Field). The festivities included recreating the memorable photo of the hoisting of the championship trophy at the end of the title contest. Here on the 40th anniversary of that memorable contest Purple Eagle tri-captains, from left, Dan Monacelli, Jim Benedetti and Alton Owens hoist the ’79 trophy as Coach Dick Diminuco looks on.
At the conclusion of Albion’s victory in the ’79 sectional title contest the late Medina Journal-Register photographer Don Cook took this memorable photo of Coach Dick Diminuco and tri-captains Monacelli, Owens and Benedetti hoisting the trophy.
