Purple Eagles blank Raiders
Scoring in every inning but one, front-running Albion shutout host Barker 13-0 this afternoon in a Niagara-Orleans League baseball game.
John Warne had four hits, including a double, Steven Stauss three and Dominic DiCureia two to lead the Albion attack.
That offense backed the strong pitching of sophomore Jason Downs who hurled a three hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
“He threw well,” said Albion coach Bruce Blanchard. “He was hitting his spots. He was on his stuff.”
The Purple Eagles scored the only two runs they needed as it turned out in the first inning on an RBI single by Connor Barleben and an error.
The victory boosts Albion’s N-O record to 7-1 while Barker slips to 2-7.
Akron 3, Newfane 2
Runner-up Akron stayed within a half game of the N-O lead by nipping visiting Newfane 3-2 to improve to 7-2.
Caleb Martin hurled a five hitter with five strikeouts and also drove in a pair of runs in the third inning with a two-run single to lead the way for Akron.
The Tigers scored what proved to be the game winner in the fourth frame on an RBI double by Zach Pfentner.
Newfane is now 4-5.
