Powell has top 5 finish at NCAA nationals
Albion High graduate and SUNY Brockport freshman Chanyce Powell had a top five finish at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field national championships being held this weekend at Birmingham, Alabama.
Enjoying her third straight big weekend of postseason competition, Powell placed fifth in the Long Jump on Friday with a leap of 18-5 3/4.
She also placed 14th in the Triple Jump today with an effort of 37-4 1/2.
“All together it was a great experience,” said Powell. “It was very unexpected and I’m happy to come home with some hardware. I’m also happy that I could contribute to our teams’ tenth place finish at the nationals.”
It was an interesting reversal from last weekend when Powell won the Triple Jump and placed 11th in the Long Jump at the Division III Atlantic Regional.
The weekend before that she captured the SUNY Athletic Conference title in the Triple Jump and placed fourth in the Long Jump.
During her scholastic days at Albion, Powell was a four-time Niagara-Orleans League champion in the Triple Jump and a two-time champion in the Long Jump. She was also a two-time Section VI champion in the Long Jump.
