Pioneer cagers soar past Albion

Roy-Hart scores overtime win; Lyndonville bows

Ignited by a barrage of 10 three-point buckets, No. 11 Pioneer rolled to a 75-49 victory over host No. 6 Albion this evening in the pre-quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class A2 Tournament.

Setting the tone at the outset, Pioneer got threes from Ravo Root, Bryce Little and Caleb Sayvone to jump out to a 15-10 first quarter lead.

Albion, which never led, pulled even just once at 8-8 on a rebound bucket by Clayton Stanton followed by free throw by Austin Loyd.

Keeping the hot hand from long range, Pioneer got two threes each from Root and Sayvone to key a 23-16 second period scoring surge which vaulted the Panthers out to a 38-26 half-time advantage.

Allbion did pull back to within six, 40-34, early in the third period after a three by Des Blackmon and a layup by Stanton, but the Purple Eagles could get no closer.

Pioneer answered right back with back-to-back layups by Little and Vince Nourse, a three by Little and a three-point play by Adam Benzel in route to moving back out to a 15 point, 55-40, advantage at the three-quarter mark.

Albion could get no closer than 13 down the stretch as Pioneer closed with a 16-3 run.

Pioneer finished with a total of six players in double figures led by Root with 17 and Sayvone 11 as Little, Nourse, Benzel and Matt Haggerty each netted 10.

Stanton finished with 12 for Albion as Blackmon and Alex Bison both had 8, Loyd and Manny Thompson 6, Fannin 5 and Connor Barleben 4.

Albion finishes the season at 7-12 while Pioneer takes a 4-14 record into Friday’s quarterfinal at No. 3 Maryvale.

Roy-Hart 79, Southwestern 71 OT
Alex Stoddard poured in 32 and Austin Heschke netted 19 to lead No. 5 Roy-Hart to a 79-71 overtime victory over visiting No. 12 Southwestern in a Class B2 pre-quarterfinal.

Stoddard scored 9 in the overtime period to lead Roy-Hart’s 17-9 scoring surge which advances the Rams to Friday’s quarterfinal against No. 4 Health Sciences.

Roy-Hart led 23-21 at the half and the contest was knotted at 62-62 at the end of regulation time.

Fillmore 61, Lyndonville 38
Jumping out to a 29-14 half-time advantage, No. 4 Fillmore went on to defeat visiting No. 13 Lyndonville 61-38 in a Section V Class D1 pre-quarterfinal round game.

Evan Milleville and AJ Buckland both had 8 for Lyndonville as Ty Hrovat tallied 6, Nick Hinkson and Pat Hinkson 5, Eddie Schildt 4 and Justin Edwards 2.

Wilson 47, Emerson 44
Trailing by five with two minutes to go, No. 9 Wilson rallied to nip No. 8 Emerson in a Class B2 pre-quarterfinal as threes by Joe Littere and Evan Shank followed by a bucket by Kyle Bradley earned the Lakemen the victory.

Bradley finished with 22 and Shank 18.

Girls Basketball

Salamanca 53, Roy-Hart 41
Trailing 19-17 at the half, No. 4 Salamanca used a 22-12 third period scoring surge to key a 53-41 victory over No. 13 Roy-Hart Tuesday in a Section VI Class B2 opening round contest.

Becky Harnish scored 15 and Kendra Hill 11 for Roy-Hart.

Akron 41, Emerson 20
Tobi Abrams and Gina Henley each scored 10 points to lead No. 6 Akron past No. 11 Emerson 41-20 Tuesday in another B1 contest.

Newfane 50, Alden 45
Trailing 32-30, Newfane rallied to outscore No. 11 Alden 20-13 in the decisive final period to claim a 50-45 win Tuesday in a Section VI Class B1 opener.

Brooke Horning scored 13, Paige Emborsky 11 and Bailey Koithan 10 to spark Newfane which led 24-17 at the half.

Bloomfield 51, Holley 24
Nicole Blackburn had 9 points and 8 rebounds, Sam Barniak 9 points and Nicki Mauro 5 assists and 4 points for No. 11 Holley this evening in a 51-24 loss at No. 6 Bloomfield in a Section V Class C1 pre-quarterfinal round contest.

Cuba-Rushford 60, Kendall 31
Down 10-8 after one quarter, No. 7 Cuba-Rushford used a 21-9 second period scoring surge to key a 60-31 victory over visiting No. 10 Kendall this evening in a Section V Class C2 pre-quarterfinal contest.

Toni ReQua had 10 points and 3 rebounds and Nicole Browe 7 points, 5 steals and 4 assists for Kendall as Shelby Reis and Taylor Kingsbury both had 4 points and 4 rebounds.
