Panther teams place high at state X-C meet

The Niagara-Orleans League and Section VI Class C champion Newfane boys and girls cross-country teams both earned high finishes at the state meet held today at Wayne Central.

The Newfane girls placed second with 83 points behind Syracuse CBA (62 points) as Kim Goerss led the Lady Panthers with a 4th place finish. Rounding out the Lady Panthers top five finishers were Catalina Ersing (29th), Lydia Chunco (38th), Vanessa Burkard (45th) and Bina Burkhard (46th).

The Newfane boys placed third with 79 points behind Mount Academy (50 points) and Watkins Glen (67 points) as Samuel Auernhamer led the way with a 4th place finish.  The Panthers top five finishers also included Collin McCabe (26th), Alan Lingle (37th), Austin Burkhard (51st) and Noah Thornton (58th).

Also the girls Class C race Akron senior Margo Henley finished 17th while in the Class B race Albion freshman Alanna Holman placed 63rd.

State Field Hockey Semifinals
Building up a commanding 5-0 half-time advantage, three-time defending champion Whitney Point went on to defeat Akron 9-0 this morning in the semifinals of the state Class C field hockey playoffs at Maine-Endwell High near Binghamton.
