Orleans unemployment rate drops to 5.1 percent

ALBION – The unemployment rate in September for Orleans County was 5.1 percent, a decrease from the 5.6 percent in September 2015, according to the State Department of Labor.

The state and national unemployment rates were 5.0 percent.

In Orleans, the Department of Labor reports the number of people working grew by 100 since September 2015, from 16,900 to 17,000 last month. The number of unemployed decreased from 1,000 to 900 during that time.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in September 2016 include Columbia and Tompkins at 3.7 percent. The Bronx had the highest rate at 7.8 percent. (Oswego topped upstate at 6.0 percent.)

Here are the rates for some Western New York counties: Cattaraugus, 5.3; Chautauqua, 5.5; Erie, 4.9; Niagara, 5.4; Orleans, 5.1; Genesee, 4.2, Wyoming, 4.4; and Livingston, 4.5; and Monroe, 4.8.
