Robert VarleyAmerican flagRobert Edward “Drain Brain” Varley, 89, of Medina, passed away on Sat., June 27, 2020 at Buffalo General Hospital.

Bob was born on Nov. 3, 1930 in Medina to the late George and Florence (Forder) Varley.

He attended school in Lyndonville and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was married to the former Margaret Licinio in May 1952. He was employed at H.J. Heinz Company until taking an opportunity to work for Donald Ross and Albion Plumbing and Heating. After several years of employment with Mr. Ross, Bob decided to go out on his own, forming Bob Varley’s Plumbing and Heating, and he continued that business until his retirement.

He was given the name “Drain Brain” by his daughter one evening while sitting around the dinner table, and it stuck with him ever since. Bob was very fond of spending time at his cottage on Lake Ontario and loved to show off the many flowers he planted there. Bob was a very hard worker who helped out many in times of crisis.

He is survived by his only daughter, Roxinne (Bruce) Montague of Lyndonville; granddaughter, Jennifer Lilleby; three great-grandchildren, Cayden, Iyla and Sawyer Lilleby; and longtime companion, Mary Chaffee; all of Medina.

He was predeceased by all of his siblings, Rose Blackman, Elsie Withey and Ken Varley.

There are no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Otter Creek Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob’s name to Alzheimer’s Association, 2805 Wehrle Drive #6, Buffalo NY 14221; or to American Heart Association of WNY, 5488 Sheridan Drive #300, Williamsville NY 14221.
