Richard N. “Dick” McGaffick

MEDINA- Richard N. “Dick” McGaffick, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 17, 2023.

Born March 26, 1944 in Lockport, Dick was a son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Kruzicki) McGaffick. At age 3, the family moved to Albion, where he attended and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School. In 1962, Dick chose to leave high school early and joined the United States Marine Corp at age 17. After 4 years he reenlisted. While fighting in Vietnam, Dick was seriously wounded in combat. He would spend one year in St. Albans Veterans Hospital in NYC and was discharged in 1968. It was during this time that he studied and earned his GED. Dick started working for Harrison Radiator in Lockport and it was there that he met his future wife. On September 1, 1973 he married the former Patricia M. Kusnierczak at St. Joseph’s Church in Albion. Two years later the couple bought a home on Maple Ridge Road in Medina, where they raised their four children. Richard retired in 1999. Several years later his health started to decline due to his injuries from Vietnam and the effects of agent orange exposure. He enjoyed watching television, using his computer and spending time with his children. In addition to Patricia, he is survived by his four children, April (Jason Strong) McGaffick, Richard McGaffick, Daniel (Alicia) McGaffick and Matthew McGaffick; four grandchildren, Briana McGaffick, Kayden and Brooklyn McGaffick and Andrew Strong; two brothers, Robert and Charles McGaffick; sisters in-law, Joan Kusnierczak and Tessie Pasnik; also several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Betty (Carl) Bull; in-laws, William and Marion Kusnierczak; sisters in-law, Carol McGaffick and Mary Lou McGaffick; and a great-niece, Skylar Pasnik. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 22 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 23 at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 211 Eagle St., Medina. Interment with full military honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
