Philip L. Gurnsey

American flagALBION – Philip L. Gurnsey, 59, passed unexpectedly at ECMC September 24, 2021 after a short illness. He was born February 20, 1962 to Carl and Carolyn (Dawson) Gurnsey in Albion, N.Y.

Phil had lived in this area his whole life. After graduation from Albion High School in 1980, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for three years. He was stationed aboard the USS American Aircraft Carrier as a boilerman.

Phil loved his sports. In High School he played baseball and wrestled. Later, he again played baseball and also golf. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills. Phil was a long-time member of the Brockport Elks Lodge #2110. He had many skills, including carpentry, plumbing and electrical. Phil worked at several good jobs in Rochester and Batavia.

Phil is survived by his parents, Carl and Carolyn; his 2 sons, Jacob B. Gurnsey of S. Carolina and Ryan L. Gurnsey of Albion; brother, Randy (Nina) Gurnsey; sisters, Sandra (Marvin) Dawley and Suzanne (Todd Grimes) Fugate, all of Albion; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Union Cemetery. There will be a gathering at the American Legion, 3429 Gaines Basin Rd. Albion on Friday October 1, starting at 2 p.m.
