Laverne SmithLaverne R. Smith, 84, of Basom, passed away unexpectedly on May 17, 2019 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born Oct. 13, 1934 in Middleport to the late Almon and Lillian (Wagner) Smith.

Laverne enjoyed spending his time camping, riding his lawnmower, feeding birds and watching wildlife. He loved traveling all over the U.S. and Canada with his late wife, Marilou, whom he took care of for many years, and with his golden retrievers. Laverne was a retiree of Harrison Radiator, where he worked for 38 years. He loved and hated the Buffalo Bills, depending on how their season was going. Laverne had been an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville since he was a young boy.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marilou, on Nov. 7, 2012; his son, Rodney, in 2014; and several of his siblings.

Laverne is survived by his children, Randy Smith, Rebecca (Michael) Cherry and Rosalie (Richard) Robinson; five grandchildren, Michael (Cara) Robinson, Adam Smith, Heather (Tim) Pahuta, Benjamin (Alicia Rohan) Cherry and Jessica (Ashlee Dow) Cherry; three great-grandchildren, Lola Robinson, Audrey Pahuta and Justin Smith; siblings, Evelyn Ribbeck, Donald Smith and Gordon (Sandy) Smith; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St., Middleport NY 14105, on Tue., May 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Laverne’s funeral service will be held at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 6379 Wolcottsville Road, Akron NY 14001, on Wed., May 22 at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery.
