Karen Smith Larson

CONWAY, SC – Karen Smith Larson departed this earthly life peacefully on March 20, 2025, at the age of 70 in Conway, South Carolina. Born on June 24, 1954, in Albion, New York. Karen was known for her quick wit and strong personality.

Karen dedicated much of her professional life to the written word, first as the typesetter and owner of Alphabet Soup in Salt Lake City, Utah. Later, she passionately served as the Director of Literacy Volunteers of America in Horry County, South Carolina, where she made significant contributions to literacy and education.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Karen cherished the outdoors and found joy in tending to her garden. She deeply valued the time spent with her grandchildren and her spouse, Elise, creating lasting memories.

Karen is survived by her loving spouse, Elise Larson; daughter, Kate Widenhouse; twin sister, Sharon (Keith) McAllister; brothers, David (Jean) Smith and Gary Smith; grandchildren, Cody (Jenn) Bensley, Blake (T.J.) Fisher, and Riley Widenhouse; stepson, Arjuna (Kat) Larson; and five great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Smith; mother, Reva Smith Bolton; stepfather, Charles Bolton; brother-in-law, Herb Brant; nephew, Steven Brant; and great-grandson, Declan James Fisher.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
