Joyce StainesJoyce A. Staines, 92, of Albion, died Aug. 17, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 30, 1927 in the Town of Ridgeway, a daughter of the late Ralph and Fanny (Putnam) Axtell, and she lived in this area all of her life.

Joyce graduated from Lyndonville High School. She was a very active member of Albion Free Methodist Church, where she served over 50 years as the treasurer and volunteered as a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher. She was a member of the Home Demo Group (Home Bureau) of the Cornell Cooperative Extension and was a 4-H leader for many years. Joyce loved traveling and seeing the world; she visited all 50 states, and she traveled to Russia with her daughter, Cheryl, to bring Hannah home from an orphanage.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Paul L. Staines; daughter, Cheryl Staines; and brothers and sisters, Harold Axtell, Marion Plumber, Arnold Axtell, Helen Rutherford, Marjorie Canham, Gerald Axtell and Ralph Axtell.

She is survived by her second husband, Charles; children, Greg (Sherrie) Staines of Albion, Pamela (Michael) Merrill of Hilton, and Dr. Brenda (David) Bierdeman of Albion; 12 grandchildren, Matt, Tim, Katie, Josh, Mary, Chad, Lisa, Jory, Hannah, Quinn, Nathaniel and Cade; several great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Fri., Aug. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Albion Free Methodist Church, 25 S. Platt St., Albion NY 14411, where her funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Albion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church; or to Hospice of Orleans, P.O. Box 489, Albion NY 14411.
