Bernadine A. (Axtell) Ross

Bernadine RossBernadine A. Ross, 99, of Barre, passed away March 6, 2020 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. She was born Oct. 30, 1920 in Knowlesville, a daughter of the late Charles and Elma (Jackson) Axtell.

She was a 1940 graduate of Medina High School. Bernadine was a member and past Deacon and Elder of Albion First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #381, Medina Chapter, for 77 years and was a life member of the Cobblestone Society. Bernie and her husband, Donald, owned and operated Albion Plumbing and Heating for several years. On April 25, 1997, Bernadine was awarded the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Award for Community Service (the highest award given to a civilian) in recognition of outstanding service to the community that exemplifies the ancient Masonic teachings of concern for the well-being of mankind, and of belief in the worldwide brotherhood of man.

Bernadine was predeceased by her sisters, Violet Beeton, Mildred Erway and Eloise Lane; her brother, Charles Axtell Jr.; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Helen Pettit.

She is survived by her loving husband of 78 years, Donald B. Ross; daughter, Deborah Onalie Ross; granddaughter, Avery Erin Ross (Matthew Johnson); great-grandsons, Ryan Grier and Lance Corporal Dawson E. Taylor; and great-great-granddaughter, Julianna Marie Grier.

The family will receive friends at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., 21 West Ave., Albion, on Mon., March 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Tue., March 10 from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by Bernadine’s funeral service at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Boxwood Cemetery.
