MEDINA- Dorothy Hamilton (née) Holloway January 30, 1956 — October 15, 2023 dies unexpectedly Sunday October 15,2023 at the age of 67. She was born January 30,1956 in Medina NY, the late William and Grace Holloway.

She worked at Walmart for over 20 years where she retired from early this year. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed music, dancing and having a good time in the presence of those she loved. One of her hobbies was gardening.

She is predeceased by her parents. William and Grace Holloway, her husband Calvin Hamilton, brothers William K Holloway Jr., Terry Holloway, and sister Peggy Lee (Richard) Banks.

She leaves behind five children Yolanda Simmons(Jatasva), Anthony Simmons(Crystal), Amber Simmons(William), Stephanie Simmons, Jasmine Simmons(Micheal), 12 grandchildren and one great grandson.

She also leaves behind her siblings Cornelia Holloway, Yvonne Satchwell, Kathy (Jeffery) Myers, Kelvin Holloway, Clara (Randy) Barnum, Casetra Holloway, and Matthew Holloway.
She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at the Oak Orchard Assembly of God, 1211 Ridge Rd., Medina, NY 14103 on Saturday October 21, from 11:00-12:00, followed by Dorothy’s Funeral Service at 12:00pm. Interment will be in Boxwood Cemetery.

ALBION- Helena Spychalski, September 20, 1927~September 20, 2023, 96, of New Port Richey, Florida, passed away on September 20, 2023 on her birthday.

Predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert Spychalski. She is survived by her daughters Roberta Bommele, (Mt. Pleasant, TN) and Jeanne Rogers (New Port Richey, FL), Granddaughter Bridget Davis (Jeff), Great granddaughter Hannah Davis.

Helena was born in Albion, New York and lived in the Holley area until relocating to Florida after retiring from her position as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools for the Holley Central School District. She was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Helena spent many hours crocheting and took great joy in completing all of her projects. Helena made and gifted over 1500 hats for Cancer patients, as well as hats for newborns and the homeless. She received a Challenge Coin from Pasco Sheriff Nocco for her selfless generosity of time and talent for gifting dozens of crocheted toys for distribution throughout Pasco County Florida.

Helena was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21

A Memorial Mass was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church (5340 High St.) Tuesday, September 26 at 10am. A reception followed in Monsignor Foynes Hall.

Inurnment will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

HOLLEY – Lawrence L. Hazzard, age 77, entered into eternal rest on October 13, 2023 at home. Born August 20th, 1946 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Larry was the son of the late Helen Clark Hazzard and grew up in Catskill, New York.

Having graduated from SUNY Brockport with degrees in Physical and Health Education, Larry was known as Coach Hazzard to thousands of students & parents throughout his three-decade career in the Albion Central School district. His love for athletics carried over into his hobbies which included tennis, golf, fishing, and enthusiastic armchair participation in televised Syracuse University athletic events. That said, nothing gave him more happiness than family.

One of Larry’s greatest joys was having the summers free to spend with his children, with long days spent in the pool, at Darien Lake, or on family vacations. In retirement, his time became increasingly filled with his three granddaughters, around whom the sun rose and set. Throughout his courageous 20-year battle with cancer, his top priority was always his family. Never was there a more devoted and loving “Papa.”

Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlene, his children, Jeffrey and Jillian, and three granddaughters, Aubrey, Tessa, and Aria. He also leaves two sisters, Lynne and Rhoda, as well as numerous extended family members. We are all so blessed to have had him in our lives and he will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace.

Calling hours will be held at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home at 16650 State Route 31 in Holley, NY 14470 on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed immediately by a short memorial service. KENDALL – Jeanette M. (Beebe) Behnke, age 85, passed away in the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center, October 13, 2023.  Jeanette was born on March 11, 1938, at the Beebe homestead on Lynch Road in Holley.

She graduated from Holley Central School in 1956 and from Highland Hospital School of Nursing, as a registered nurse in 1959.

William and Jeanette Behnke were married August 15, 1959.

Jeanette’s career began at the Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion. For many years, she worked for the Holley and Kendall school districts as a substitute school nurse. Other jobs included nurse for the New York State Migrant Childcare Program and night supervisor at the Beikirch Nursing Home.

A longtime member of the Kendall Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, she held the offices for President and Treasurer over the years.

Knitting and crocheting were her favorite pastimes, over the years making many gifts for family and friends. Her hands were always busy. She was also known as an avid reader. She also enjoyed travelling and camping and loved making cookies for her grandchildren to enjoy.

Mrs. Behnke was predeceased by her parents Reed and Beatrice (Barrett) Beebe, brother Selden Beebe and a son-in-law Scott Heidemann.

She is survived by her husband William, son Michael (Janet) Behnke, daughters Sharon (Charles) Patt and Lisa (Scott Hass) Heidemann-Hass, grandchildren Elizabeth (Steven) Rienks, Christine Behnke, Bryan (Meg) Patt, Jason (Quinn) Patt, Reed (Kristina) Heidemann, Spencer (Erin) Heidemann, sister Maxine (Joseph) Nenni, sister-in-law Debra Beebe, nine great-grandchildren, and nephews Michael and Gregory Nenni, and Jeramie and Eric Beebe.

There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend Jeanette’s memorial service, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1769 Kendall Rd., Kendall.  Private interment in Beechwood Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

ORLANDO- David Lee Wolk, 84, of Orlando, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2023, after a brief illness.

David was born on February 27, 1939, to Norman and Dorothy Wolk in Rochester, NY. He was a graduate of Medina High School class of 1957, after which he married Angie Ottaviano and became father to two boys, Dan and Marty, who currently live in Orlando, Florida.  David was a loving and involved father, coaching and serving as the President of Medina Little League.

Later in life, he was blessed to be the grandfather of five grandchildren, Richard, Sam, Nick, Dan, Mitch, and three great grandchildren, Carter, Ruby and Melody.   He greatly enjoyed traveling down to Florida yearly to visit the family.

David started his adult life working in his father’s clothing store, Wolk Apparel, before making a transition into the restaurant business where he worked as a banquet manager at many restaurants, including the Apple Grove Inn in Medina, NY.

He lived in Hamburg, NY, for many years, working at the Lakeview Hotel, Russer Foods and Wegmans.  One of his favorite events was volunteering at the Erie County Fair parking cars.

For those who knew David, you know he was a people person at heart.  He never met a stranger.   He took every chance to get to know everyone he met.  He was famous for knowing all the waitresses and staff at any restaurant or bar he regularly visited.   He was an avid card player and for many years hosted a poker game in Niagara Falls which was attended by folks from all over the country.   He loved spending time with friends and family, and, of course, loved the Buffalo Bills.

David will be missed by all who knew and loved him.   There are no formal services planned.  A Celebration of Life gathering was held in David’s memory October 14, 2023, in Orlando, Florida

HOLLEY- James Logsdon, age 74, passed away peacefully at the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence in Albion, NY on October 8, 2023. He was born December 19, 1948, in Norman, OK., the oldest child of the late James and Esther (Durkat) Logsdon.  Jim retired from Eastman Kodak Co. after 33 years of service.  Jim loved working, but his passion was his family.  He was an avid sports fan, having coached his sons in numerous sports.  He was an “Amateur Political Pundit.”

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother David and sister Mary Jo Carpenter

Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife Dana; sons Benjamin (Krysta) Logsdon and Jacob (Kari-Lynn Flow) Logsdon; grandchildren Emma, Isabelle and Silas; siblings, Dr. Gregory (Vicki), Mark (Paul Willink), Kevin (Lisa), Dr. Karen (Mike Capan), Loretta (Bill) Andris, Peter (Roberta); sisters-in-law, Mary West-Logsdon, brothers-in-law, Dennis Carpenter and Dorr Burns.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside committal service on Friday, October 27th at 1:00pm at Hillside Cemetery in Holley.

LYNDONVILLE – Loren Strickland Jr., 48, passed away at his home in Kansas on August 4, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Pam; six children, Katelynn Kowalczyk, Seajay and Leelynn Lewis, Shannon Kidney, Andrew and Nolan Weston; his father, Loren (Linda) Strickland Sr.; a sister, Amanda Strickland; a niece, Brooke Keiffer; a nephew, Christian (Buck) Strickland; and several aunts, uncles and cousins, and a mother-in-law, Sharon Matthews.

Loren is predeceased by his mother, Renee Strickland; a nephew, Nicholas Keiffer; and fathers-in-law, Art Kidney and Howard Matthews.

Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, October 14, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carlton United Methodist Church, 1196 Archibald Rd, Waterport, NY 14571, where a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m.

MEDINA- David G. Luthart, age 84, of Medina, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 at the Orchard Rehab & Nursing Center.

Born December 13, 1938 in Wales, NY he was a son of the late Arthur and Irene (Conrad) Luthart. On July 18, 1959 David married the former Marion J. Singer. The couple lived in the area ever since. David worked as a truck driver and as a school bus driver. He was a member of the Lockport Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. David loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Luthart was predeceased by his wife, Marion Luthart in 2002; his parents; twelve brothers and sisters; and a son in-law, Yancy Osher in 2017.

Survivors include his daughter, Diana Osher of Medina; granddaughters, Rebekah Osher (Marc Roman), Rosalie (John) Miller III and Robin Osher (Justice Buzard); step-granddaughter, Shandra Bethune; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Andrews, MJ and Mari Roman, Greyson Miller; step-great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Peyton, Dakota, Jackson and Dustin Bethune; also many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 3:30pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6339 Hamm Rd., Lockport, NY 14094. MEDINA – Karen L. Tabor, 71, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Born on June 8, 1952 in Medina, Karen was the daughter of the late Earl and Irene (Dayer) Schoelles.  She was a graduate of Lyndonville High School, Class of 1971.

She married the late Charles A. Tabor, Sr. on July 8, 1972.  Karen worked at the Medina Dairy before dedicating herself as a homemaker. She was a parishioner of the former Grace Baptist Church in Medina for more than 40 years, where she previously taught Sunday School and attended weekly services with her family. In 1998 she completed her studies in Early Childhood Development at Genesee Community College and worked several years as a day care provider for Head Start and other organizations prior to her retirement.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tabor was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles (1999) and brother, Roger (1965).

Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Charles (Julia) Tabor, Jr., Jennifer Tabor and Laura Clark; grandchildren, Katie Clark, Michael Clark, Chloe Tabor and Sophia Tabor; brothers, Duane Schoelles and Garry Schoelles; sisters, Darlene Pritt and Debbie Klatt; numerous nieces and nephews, including great-nephew, Mackenzie Barrett.

ALBION/GASPORT – Donald S. Bielicki, age 75, died October 3, 2023 in his brother Mike’s residence following a long illness.

He was born November 4, 1947 in Albion to Bernard and Regina (Swiercznski) Bielicki and had lived in this area for most of his life.  Don was a member of St. Brendan’s on the Lake Parish, a 35-year member as well as Past President and Treasurer of the Gasport Lions Club, and enjoyed cooking and hunting.  Don also loved travelling and had been all over the world with one of his favorite places being the Caribbean Islands.  He was a very family-oriented man and one of his most enjoyable activities was to watch his grandson play baseball.  Mr.  Bielicki was predeceased by his wife Janis in 2009.

He is survived by his daughter: Jennifer (Bryon) Jopson of Rochester, his brother: Michael (Pat) Bielicki of Medina, his sisters: Judy (Mike) Osburn of Goshen, Patricia Morrison of London, England, his grandson: Brandon Donald, as well as several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.  Family and friends are invited to attend Don’s Mass of Christian Burial SATURDAY OCTOBER 14th in Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, 106 S. Main St., Albion, NY, 14411, beginning at 10 am.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

BROCKPORT – Karen L. Webster, 79, of Brockport, NY, formerly of Medina, NY, entered into rest on Tuesday, October 3, 2223, at the Villages of Orleans.

Born on May 8, 1944, in Rochester, NY, she was the daughter of the late Kermit and Dorothy (Rosekrans) Beadle.

Karen graduated from Holley High School in 1963 and married the late David Webster, and together, they raised two children. She worked various jobs, including the Hallmark Store, State Farm, and lastly, as a seamstress. She was an active member of the Eastern Star, Chapter 381, and the Daughters of the Nile and was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Medina. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and baking, especially making her famous cheesecake., but most of all, she cherished spending time with her family on Sundays.

Her two children survive Karen, Jeffrey (Lauren) Webster of Lancaster, PA, and Lisa (Tosh) Bitsas of Spencerport, NY,. Lovingly known as Nana to her four grandchildren, Kiki, Ana, Niko Bitas, and Brenleigh Webster. Also surviving is a brother, Kermit (Rose Marie) Beadle of Holley, NY, a nephew, John Beadle of Brockport, NY, and a niece, Kathy (Scott Hamlin Sedore of Holley, NY, and a great-niece, Jessica Sedore.

Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 11 AM- 12 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 522 S Main St, Medina, NY 14103, where a funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM. The Order of the Eastern Star will perform her Burial Rites, before the start of the funeral. Burial will be private for the family.

MEDINA – Carol S. Fox entered into rest on Monday, October 2, 2023 with her family by her side following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Medina on October 5, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Regina (Pszczolkowski) Sevenski. Carol graduated from Lyndonville High School, Class of 1963. She married the late John R. Fox, Sr. on November 15, 1969, together they raised four children.

Early on Carol worked for FMC in Middleport and Cormed in Medina. She then worked as the Human Resources Director for ARC GLOW (formerly ARC of Orleans) for over 30 years, retiring in 2016. Carol was also a TWIG volunteer at Medina Memorial Hospital and enjoyed bowling with her sisters in the local bowling leagues. Carol was a dedicated and loving Wife, Mother, Grandma/ “Mimo”, Aunt, Sister and friend. She always made sure that every holiday was so special, including Easter Sundays with egg hunts, big Thanksgiving dinners and the most giving and fun Christmas’ ever. She took so much pride in her family, always putting them first, making sure they had what they needed and was always there for everyone. She will be forever missed and in the hearts of all that knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John R. Fox, Sr. in 2017; son, Jeffrey Fox in 2021; and her sister, Maryann Hildreth in 2022.

Left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Johnny (Apryl) Fox, Jr. of Kent; Thomas (Jill) Fox of Albion, and Aric (Emily) Fox of Medina; daughter in-law, Landa Fox of North Port, FL; nine grandchildren, Brayden, Carly, Dylan, Madison, Thomas, Caleb, Hannah, Aric Jr. and Adalynne; siblings, Lorraine Catruna, Patricia Howard, Barbara (Nate) Lincoln, Rosemary (Pete) Pegelow, Dorothy (Gary) Callard, Vincent (Vicki) Sevenski and Margaret (Rick) DePeters; and many nieces and nephews, including Jill Pegelow who was near and dear to her heart.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, Oct. 9 from 4-7 PM at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Richard Csizmar on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 11:00AM at Holy Family Parish, 106 S. Main St., Albion, NY 14411. All are welcome to join the family for a luncheon immediately following the mass, the location of which will be announced at the mass.

GRAND ISLAND – Thomas E. Nogle, of Grand Island, passed away with his loving family at his side on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the Medina Memorial Hospital- North Wing Skilled Nursing Facility. Born October 31, 1941 in N. Tonawanda, he was a son of the late James A. and Mildred E. (Waterman) Nogle. Mr. Nogle graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1959. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1962. Stationed in Jacksonville, FL, he served aboard the USS Enterprise. On September 19, 1964 he married the former Carol Erb. Mr. Nogle worked for General Motors at the Tonawanda Forge as a tool and die maker for 30 years, retiring in 1998. He was a charter member of the Grand Island Moose Lodge #180, where he served as treasurer for many years. Mr. Nogle was also a member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts, through which he took his family on many adventurous vacations. He was also an avid auto racing fan, both locally and NASCAR. After retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nogle was predeceased by an infant son, David in 1969; his wife, Carol Nogle in 2017; and a brother, James Nogle in 1991.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cherie (Ron) Stork of Medina; son, James (Kathy) Nogle of Lockport; three grandsons, Tyler, Connor and Kai Nogle; three brothers, C. Daniel Nogle (Jeanne Crane), Richard (Cindy) Nogle and John (Linda) Nogle; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 12:00PM at the Grand Island Moose Lodge #180, 2524 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island, NY 14072. Private interment with military honors will be held in Elmlawn Memorial Park, Kenmore. MEDINA – Donald G. Much passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the age of 66.

Don was born on September 29, 1956 in San Diego, CA.  He was raised in Winneconne, WI by his parents LaVaun (Thiel) Much and Wencil Much. Don graduated from Winneconne High School as well as Martins School of Cosmetology. He settled in Jeffersonville, IN where he worked as a CNA.

Don had a special connection with the elderly and enjoyed his job very much. Don spent his later years in Medina, NY, where he lived with his loving partner, William Elster, Jr. 

In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his partner, Bill in 2020.

Survivors include his siblings, Barbara (James) Wussow, Pamela Much and Peter Much. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews as well as many cousins.

A heartfelt thank you to Bill’s sister and family, who cared for Don after Bill passed, Kim (Eric) Brown; nieces, Jennifer Shingleton and Dina Narburgh.

LEESBURG – Halina Maria Usselman, 82, of Leesburg FL, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 17.

She was born in Tychy Poland in 1943 to Zofia and Stanislaus Gromek and moved to New York in the 1960s when she married Earl Usselman and raised her only son, Orest Usselman. Halina Usselman moved to Leesburg Florida in the 1990s and enjoyed a quiet social life.

Halina Usselman was preceded in death by her husband Earl J. Usselman, her siblings Mateusz, Genowefa, and Ryszard, her parents, Zofia and Stanislaus, and are survived by Orest D. Usselman (Catherine Usselman), his children Danelle Smith (Mathew Smith), Michele Tucholski (Joseph Tucholski), Christopher Usselman,  Casey Usselman, Cameron Usselman,  Cate Usselman (Matthew DeCarlo), Sofia Usselman, and seven great-grandchildren.

Halina especially will be remembered for her love of gardening, caring for animals, crocheting, her love of cookies, and known by many as the “Polish Princess”.

MEDINA – James E. VanWagner Sr., age 82, died October 1, 2023 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence following a long illness.

He was born May 7, 1941 in PA to Harry and Hazel (Connelly) VanWagner and had lived in this area most of his life.  Jim was a veteran of the United States Army, a member of the Lockport American Legion and the Sutherland Lodge F&AM.  He enjoyed fishing, bowling and taking trips to the casino.  Mr. VanWagner was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years Denise, his children: Shannon (Carl) Nordvik of Lewiston, Dayna Wiepert of FL, James (Becky) VanWagner Jr. of Newfane, Krista (Mark) Roberts of Lewiston, Erica (Frank ) Colucci of Kendall, Angela Mann of Kendall, his sister: Linda (Keith) Torgenson of ND, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and his beloved dog “Bella”.
