Dr. Fran Murphy
MENDON – A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, December 16th, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Hermance Family Chapel of St. Basil the Great at St. John Fisher University 3690 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618. In lieu of flowers please consider a gift in Fran’s memory directed to the Dr. Fran and Lisa Murphy Experiential Learning Award at St. John Fisher University 3690 East Avenue, Rochester. NY 14618, or Camp Good Days and Special Times, 1332 Pittsford Mendon Road, Mendon NY 14506.
It’s with heavy hearts and loving memories that we’ve just learned of Dr. Fran Murphy’s passing. Fran wasn’t just a teacher… he was a life coach for the soul, armed with wit and wisdom and an endless repertoire of tales … most of which were true.
Fran dedicated most of his life to education, shaping the lives of countless students, colleagues, and communities. He was a principal, school superintendent, and college professor and dean. Among his many school leadership roles, he served as Director of the International School of Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia. He later trained school superintendents across numerous states, always championing leadership, integrity, and the power of education.
Fran was more than just an academic and leader. He was also a Renaissance man, an endurance athlete, a licensed sailor, and, most importantly, a proud father and grandfather. He lived his life with energy, passion, and love. Whether in Western New York or St. Petersburg, Florida, Fran filled every space he occupied with his booming laugh, infectious energy, and stories that could turn even mundane moments into unforgettable adventures.
As a teacher, Fran didn’t just teach; he mentored. He didn’t just inform; he transformed. His students, colleagues, and friends walked away a little brighter and happier, buoyed by his relentless belief in the power of humor, kindness, and education to change the world.Fran leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an extensive list of dreams and goals he inspired in others. He is survived by his wife Lisa, sons Sean Murphy, Petar Kodzas, and Herb Drayton, daughter Bardha Varfaj, daughters in law Melissa Murphy, Ines Draskovic and Laurel Drayton, son in law, Chris Kelly, brother, Neil Murphy, sisters Kathy Murphy and Joanne Riccardi, grandchildren Ela, Kennedy, Connor, Liam, Izzy, Fable and Chris, brother in law Charlie Holmes and his family, countless nieces and nephews, precious neighbors and his cherished friends, along with the indelible mark he left on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In Fran’s honour, let’s not mourn his passing but celebrate his remarkable life… preferably with dose friends, good food, a funny story, a hearty laugh, and maybe a glass of something Fran would have enthusiastically approved of.
Rest easy, Fran. You taught us well, loved us thoroughly, and made us laugh until we cried. You’ve left the stage, but your stories will live on forever. And, knowing you, you’re already regaling the heavens with Irish jokes and tales that will have the angels in stitches. With fond remembrance, Nicky and Ian…
Fran’s arrangements have been entrusted to the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home of Albion, NY.

Joyce P. Bennett
LYNDONVILLE – Joyce P. Bennett, of Lyndonville, NY passed away peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 following a long battle with cancer.
Born August 11, 1934 in Brockport, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Inez (Stamp) Pulver.
Joyce graduated from Spencerport High School and went on to earn a master’s degree from Brockport State College. She married the late Gordon Bennett, Jr. settling in Lyndonville and raising three children. A teacher and homemaker most of her life, Joyce was very active in the community. She was a member of the Lyndonville Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in a variety of ways, with an after-school program for kids being one of her favorite activities.
Joyce also volunteered as a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed being a member of the library book club at the Yates Community Library where she also ran a Wednesday morning reading and craft program for preschool children. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Never one to sit idle, Joyce enjoyed sewing, painting, arts and crafts, and especially gardening. She helped to raise her grandchildren who were met each day after school by her smiling face and often a fresh plate of cookies. Kindness, patience, finding joy in the small details in nature, adapting on the fly and graciously handing all that life threw at her while relying on her Christian faith were her greatest strengths. Family was her greatest gift.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon (1983); companion and best friend of 20 years, Robert Stiemer (2004); her son, Aaron Bennett (2020); and two brothers, Merle (Margot) Pulver and Dale (Christine) Pulver.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Susan Hrovat of Lyndonville, and Linda (Gergis) Bennett Naiem of TX; grandchildren, Travis (Jessica) Hrovat of Caledon, ON, Taylor Hrovat (Andrew Lowe) of LeRoy, Ty (Jelena) Hrovat of Lyndonville, Rebecca (Justin) Hyatt and Charles (Hannah) Bennett both of Webster; great-grandchildren, Emersyn and Lily Hrovat, Ryder Lowe, Daniel and Olivia Naiem, Harrison and Amelia Hyatt; sister, Marylou (Charles) Stage; also, several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring with an interment to follow in Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Yates Community Library, the Lyndonville Lions Club, and the Knights Kaderli Memorial Fund.
