Joan A. Thomas

Joan Thomas

Joan A. Thomas, 86, of Medina, passed away peacefully on Thu. May 14, 2020 at Absolut Care in Gasport, surrounded by family.

Joan was born on Sept. 16, 1933 and was a daughter of Vernon and Alice Krisher. She married the love of her life, John (Jack) A. Thomas, on June 18, 1971, and Jack passed away on Oct. 18, 2015. Joan was a graduate of Lyndonville High School and Houghton College. She taught at Lyndonville Central School for 30+ years. Joan and Jack loved to travel around in their RV in their younger years, and to go on cruises with family later in life. In her free time, Joan loved to be outside working in her garden, or playing her piano. She was dedicated to her church community and played organ and piano during Sunday services. After retirement, Joan and Jack lived in Florida during the winter months and loved to host family and friends in their Tarpon Springs home. In recent years, Joan looked forward to her Tuesday dinner dates with her granddaughter, Ashley.

Joan is survived by her six children, Dawn (Anthony) Kwiatkowski, David (Bobbi) Huntington, Mark Thomas, Judy (Bill) Wright, Jeffrey (Debbie) Thomas and Jon Thomas; her grandchildren, which include Christopher, Darren, Nicole, Ashley, Nathan, Aaron, Kristen, Suzy, Ryan, Justin, Kayla, Tammy and Jay; her siblings, Suzanne Lorenz, Carol Fulcomer and Dan (Christine) Krisher; along with many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to the love of her life, Jack, she was also predeceased by her parents, Vernon and Alice Krisher; her son, Douglas Huntington; her daughter, Jacquie Atkinson; and her siblings, Vernon (Bud) Krisher, Margie Mapes and Diane Palmer.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Burial will be in Lynhaven Cemetery, Lyndonville.

Kirk G. Bane

Kirk Bane

Kirk G. Bane, 74, of Buffalo, died peacefully at home on April 28, 2020. He had battled cancer since 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Laurine (née Furner); daughter, Karen; son, William (Marcy) Wright; grandchildren, Jack, Liam, Emmett and Amelia Wright; sister, Kathy (Gene Dinse); brother, Randall; and true friend, Peter Brattke; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, Paul and Mildred (née Stalker) Bane of Lyndonville.

Kirk worked as a courier for most of his life. He cherished his family and his writing time. His style was artistic and unique. He was a gentle, loving soul, especially appreciated as a great listener.

Kirk donated his body to the UB School of Medicine.

There is no service planned at this time.

Charles H. “Charlie” Goble, 71, of Middleport, died May 14, 2020 at his residence following a short illness.

He was born Oct. 16, 1948 in Sparta, N.J. to Virgil and Rosemary Goble and lived in this area since 1990. Charlie was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and he worked as a computer hardware repairman for QBC in Amherst. He was a very social person who would strike up a conversation with anyone. In earlier years, Charlie enjoyed hunting, golfing, woodworking, and tinkering around the house. He also enjoyed his Brittany spaniels, as well as NASCAR racing.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doreen; his children, Justin and Tracy, both of Minnesota; four grandchildren; and two nephews.

There will be no visitation. Service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Matthew Cemetery, West Seneca.

John W. Cebula

John Cebula

John W. Cebula, 73, passed away after a second battle with cancer on Wed., May 13, 2020 at his home in Castile, N.Y.

He was born on Dec. 30, 1946 in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of the late John W. and Anna (Nigriny) Cebula.

He attended Union College and Albany Law School. He came to Albion as a VISTA volunteer with Legal Aid, passed the New York State Bar Examination while there, and was a longtime managing attorney for Oak Orchard Legal Services in Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming counties. He  retired in 2008. John was a champion for the poor and migrant workers in the community.

He was a former President of the Swan Library Association and a supporter of Ministry of Concern and Orleans Community Action.

John enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Erin (Jose Davila) Cebula of Brockport; grandchildren, Gabriella and Magdalene Davila, both of Brockport; partner, Ann Swearingen of Castile; Ann’s daughters, Sara and Mikey; Ann’s grandchildren, Blake and Ryann of Warsaw; and a cousin, Rev. Anne Marie Duval Monahan of Alexandria, Va.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with a celebration of John’s life at a later date.

Clement Bokman

Loving husband, father and grandfather

Clement A. “Butch” Bokman, 83, of Allegany and formerly of Lockport, passed away peacefully on Sun., May 10, 2020 at Olean General Hospital, following a brief illness.

Butch was born on Dec. 6, 1936 in Albion and was a son of Michael and Mary Smith Bokman. He married his loving wife of 64 years, Arlene Giarrizzo, who survives him.

Butch was a graduate of Albion High School. He had a long established career in the automobile industry, owning dealerships in the Olean and Buffalo areas. Early in his career, while working at his brother Mike’s Buick dealership in Medina, Butch received Buick’s esteemed Royal Purple Achievement Award for having the top Buick sales performance in the country. He was the youngest ever to win the award at just 22 years of age. Butch and his wife, Arlene, raised golden retriever puppies that many families in the Lockport area brought into their homes, made part of their families, and loved.

Butch lived on Wynkoop Road in Lockport, where he and his wife raised their five children, for over 40 years before moving to Allegany in 2017 to be closer to his family. He loved to have family and friends over for conversation that always involved his love of quarter horses. Growing up on a farm in Medina taught Butch his love of animals. He trained calf-roping horses and competed in rodeos for many years.

Along with his loving wife, Arlene, Butch is survived by his three sons (“the boys”), Rick (Kathy) Bokman, Scott (Patti) Bokman, and Mark (Susan) Bokman; a sister, Rita Lewis; a son-in-law, Mark Leitzan; five grandchildren, Mike (Brittney) Bokman, Christa (Dan) Hunt, Nicki (Ryan) Williams, Ryan Bokman and Mathew Bokman; three great-grandchildren, Max, Eli and Emma; many beloved nieces and nephews; and special friends, Tom, Audrey, Bob, Albert, Tiffany, Don and Nancy, Bill “Big O,” Carl, Doc and Mary Ruth, and Barb.

Butch was predeceased by two daughters, Julie, and Dr. Susan Bokman Leitzan; his sisters, Veronica “Ronnie” Gillmeister Cameron and Mary Basinait; and his brothers, Michael, Henry, Joseph and Jimmy Bokman.

Services will be private. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a date and time to be announced. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Albion.

Constance Brakenbury

Constance Kwiatkowski Brakenbury, 80, of Waterport, died peacefully on May 12, 2020. She was born on March 11, 1940 in Albion, a daughter of the late Arthur and Eleanore (Lewandowski) Kwiatkowski, and she lived in this area all of her life.

Connie graduated from Albion High School and then attended Bryant & Stratton College in Buffalo, where she majored in business. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at St. Mary’s Church in Albion, and also at the Carlton Fire Department. She loved to shop, vacation at Top Sail Island, make arts and crafts, watch birds and, most of all, watch TV – she used to say, “My TV never let me down.”

Connie is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard; sons, Keith (Jeff Bodine) Brakenbury, Kyle (Colleen) Brakenbury, and Kevin Brakenbury; daughter, Ondrea (Angelo) Pate; grandchildren, Gregory (Sarah) Brakenbury, Felicia (Sean) Dhondt, Jennifer (Trent) Tobias, Dietrich Pate, Michael Loggins, Mitchell Pate, Marguerite Brakenbury, Eowyn Pate, and Maia Pate; nine great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Her graveside service will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Brown Road, Albion.

Terry J. Moyer

Terry MoyerTerry J. Moyer, 52, of Medina, entered into rest on Sun., May 10, 2020. Terry was born in Brockport on March 28, 1968.

He married Paula Livingston in 1993, and together they raised three children. Terry enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, who meant the world to him.

He was predeceased by his beloved son, Terry J. “Duder” Moyer Jr. on Aug. 28, 2011; his father, Raymond Bennett in 1986; and a nephew, Raymond Kingdollar in 2016.

Terry is survived by his wife of 27 years, Paula Moyer of Batavia; his two daughters, Rosa (Kalen) Hastings of Bowling Green, Ky. and Kaitlyn (Cory Smeltzer) Moyer of Medina; four grandchildren, Kileigh, Karter and Khloe Hastings and Baine Smeltzer; sisters, Quenna Bennett and Serena Bennett; several nieces and nephews; and father in-law, Cecil Livingston.

Services will be privately held at the convenience of the family.

Judith McGuireJudith Ann McGuire, 76, of Albion, passed away May 11, 2020. She was born July 1, 1943 in Brockport to the late William and Marjorie (Phelps) Wadhams.

Judy liked spending her time going to bingo with her friends, Emma and Jenny. In her younger years, she enjoyed being social and crocheting. She loved her sweets and especially loved her family.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Janette McClary, Regina VanAusdell, Sharon Daniels, Patricia Egami and William Wadhams; and her sisters-in-law, Dora Wadhams and Mary Wadhams.

Judy is survived by her daughters, Teresa (Gary) Holland, Robin Vieira, Carol Wegman and Merrie McGuire; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Claire Bartlett and Sandra (Mike Schmackpfeffer) Walter; brothers, Michael Wadhams and Edward Wadhams; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Mt. Albion Cemetery.

Robert Simpson

American flagRobert Simpson, of Center Valley, Pa. and formerly of Medina, passed away on May 9, 2020 at the age of 88. He was born in Albion and spent his adult life in Medina. Robert was married to Florence (Nenni) for 57 years before her death in 2012.

He is survived by his three children, Dennis (Shelley) Simpson, Gary (Kelly) Simpson, and Janet (Mark) Gooch; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He went on to work for Niagara Mohawk for 38 years. He was a life member of the Medina Council #651 Knights of Columbus and also belonged to the Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. Robert enjoyed model making and wood working. His witty humor, strong ethics, and dedication to his wife and children will always be remembered.

Robert will stay forever in the hearts of all of us who were blessed to have known him, as wife, son, daughter, sister, brother or friend.

Services will be privately held by the immediate family. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors. Subsequently, a church service and luncheon will be planned for later this summer.

Anne Stevenson

Anne Marquis Stevenson, 85, of Sarasota, Fla. and formerly of Albion, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2020.

She was born in Albion on June 20, 1934 to William and Marion Marquis. She graduated from Albion High School, class of 1952. She married her husband of 66 years, David W. Stevenson, on Nov. 14, 1953. They had a wonderful marriage together. She was an administrative assistant to the superintendent of Albion Central School District until her retirement in 1991. She and David enjoyed retirement, splitting their time between Albion and Sarasota. They eventually made Sarasota their full time residence. Anne was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Albion and St. Wilfred Episcopal Church in Sarasota. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Marion Marquis; and her son-in-law, Stanley T. Saeger Jr.

She is survived by her husband, David; two children, Lynnette A. Saeger of Coopersburg, Pa. and David B. (Santa) Stevenson of Sarasota; and four grandchildren, Stanley T. Saeger III of Philadelphia, Pa., Abigail (Paul) Masi of Philadelphia, Alexander Stevenson of Sarasota, and Jessica (William) Rockey of St. Augustine, Fla.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.

Mary Margaret Tierney

Mary Margaret Tierney, 92, entered into rest on Fri., May 8, 2020 at The Villages of Orleans Health & Rehabilitation Center in Albion. She was born July 28, 1927 in Kingston, N.Y., a daughter of the late William H. and Kathryn (Hartnett) Tierney.

A graduate of Kingston High School in the class of 1944, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Miss Tierney worked as a third grade teacher in the Kingston City School District in Lake Katrine, N.Y. for many years.

She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, William F. Tierney Jr. of Medina, James Tierney of Winter Springs, Fla., Timothy (LuAnn) Tierney of Albion, Mary Ann (John) Jablonski of Medina, Michael (Debra) Tierney of Oldsmar, Fla., Sheila Tierney (Bill Gardner) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Kathleen O’Neill of Jupiter, Fla., John (Kate) Tierney of Jupiter, Maureen Burts of Jupiter, and Amy (Gordon) Luthart of Medina; many great-grandnieces and nephews, Brooke (Jeremy) Beatty and JT Jablonski, Matthew, Daniel (Jenna) Tierney and Emily (Alex) Dumont, Mikayla Tierney, Drew and Dane Taylor, Zachary and Alexander O’Neill, Kara and Thomas Burts, Taylor, Caroline and Hannah Tierney, Brendan and Trevor Luthart.

She was predeceased by her sister, Ann Tierney, in 1981; brother, William F. in 2011 (Joan 1990) Tierney; and nephew, Thomas Tierney, in 1970.

Theresa Cary Theresa A. (LeStorti) Cary, of Greece and Holley, went home on Tue., May 5, 2020 at age 78 to be with her parents, James and Alma LeStorti; and her husband, Richard Cary.

She is survived by her sons, James (Kelly) and Richard S. (Geri) Cary; grandchildren, Rebecca, Kayla, Andrew and Morgan Cary; sister, Donna (Greg) Stafford; sister-in-law, Debra Beebe; brother-in-law, Robert Cary; and her dear friends.

Theresa was a former village clerk in Holley and a longtime member of Holley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Colleen T. Lewandowski

Colleen Lewandowski

Colleen T. Lewandowski, 74, of Medina, passed peacefully at Buffalo General Hospital on Thu., May 7, 2020.

Born on Dec. 24, 1945 in Medina, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Grace (Tracey) Tylec. Colleen attended Middleport High School and Niagara University, where she received her Registered Nursing degree, specializing in labor and delivering. She worked for 44 years at Medina Memorial Hospital. She assisted in delivering more than 6,000 babies.

Colleen was a communicant of the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Medina, and later of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in Middleport. She enjoyed reading, feeding wild birds, and gardening. With her birthday falling on Christmas Eve, Christmas was her favorite time of the year. Colleen mostly enjoyed spending time with her family, which she loved so much.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, William (Bill) Lewandowski; one daughter, Amy Niethe of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Doreen (David) Wolff of Lancaster, Pa. and Kathleen (David) Allen of Winter Park, Fla.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Patricia (Thomas) White of Middletown, Conn., Vincent (Cindy) Tylec of Middleport, and Mark (Gail) Tylec of Deland, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Colleen is predeceased by one daughter, Tracey Baker; and one sister, M. Pam Belfield.

There are no calling hours. A private committal service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Medina at the family’s convenience. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date to be announced.

Sharon McAvoySharon E. McAvoy, 80, of Gasport, passed away at Buffalo General Hospital on May 6, 2020.  She was born Feb. 10, 1940 in Lockport, a daughter of the late James and Jennie (Moreland) Barnard.

Sharon was a past president of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a charter member of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Company. She loved playing bingo and was a former member of the Hartland Drift Dodgers. Mrs. McAvoy retired from Harrison Radiator.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred McAvoy; son, Ronald Granzow; brothers, William and David Barnard; and sisters, Jeanette Fletcher and Judy Barnard.

Sharon is survived by her children, Russell (Marybeth) Granzow, Jacqueline Granzow, Harry (Margie) Granzow and John (Tammy) McAvoy; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private funeral service will take place, with burial at Hartland Central Cemetery.

Humberto J. “Bert” Obes Jr., 56, of Holley, died May 7, 2020 in The Villages of Orleans following a long illness. He was born June 2, 1963 in Miami, Fla. and lived in this area most of his life.

Bert received his master’s degree in accounting from Niagara University and went on to own several area laundromats with his family.

He is survived by a sister in Lockport and an aunt in Florida.

Dorothy VanWycke

Dorothy VanWycke, 98, of Waterport, passed away May 6, 2020 after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 27, 1921 in Albion to Fred and Rita (Hoyt) Parker and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Mrs. VanWycke was predeceased by her husband, Martin, after 75 years of marriage.

She is survived by her son, Martin (Dolores) VanWycke; her daughter, Judy Ann Snyder; five grandchildren, Kurt (Tammie), Pam (Doug), Gary (Jennifer), Darlene and Charlene; and seven great-grandchildren, Erick, Jenna, Levi, Erin, Sierra, Bryan and Kayla.

Joanna P. Loughlin

Joanna Loughlin

On the evening of May 1, 2020, Joanna Loughlin, a longtime resident of Rock Hill, N.Y., died at the age of 91. The youngest of five children, Joanna was born Oct. 12, 1928 in Dunkirk, N.Y. to parents Joseph Narusczwicz and Sophia Pieczol, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania in 1917.

She attended the State University of New York at Brockport, where she earned an undergraduate degree in physical education and a master’s degree in health education. Joanna went on to teach junior and senior high school students for more than three decades.

She married John I. Loughlin (deceased 2011) and settled in Medina, where they raised three children. Joanna served on the board of Medina Memorial Hospital and was active in a number of community organizations. She and John moved to Rock Hill in 1990 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Joanna is survived by three sons, John (Darlene) of Menlo Park, Calif., Joseph (Suzanne) of Rock Hill, and James of Manhattan and Rock Hill; her adored grandchildren, Juliette (Robert), Julia and Adam; and beloved sister, Genevieve.

Her grandson, Trevor, predeceased her in 2013.

Joanna was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother; a dedicated teacher, sportswoman, friend and volunteer; a skilled knitter, the best gingerbread cookie maker, and a cat rescuer who loved her life on Treasure Lake.

A memorial Mass will be scheduled following the lifting of Covid restrictions.

Robert Goodell

Robert G. Goodell, 73, of Newfane, died May 6, 2020 in the Newfane Rehab and Health Care Center following a brief illness. He was born July 13, 1946 in Olean to George and Betty (App) Goodell and lived in this area most of his life.

Robert was a member of Community Fellowship Church in Johnson Creek, worked as a pattern maker for AgPack in Gasport, and then worked for Bison Bag. He drove a bus after he “retired” and was known for raising beagles. Robert was a gun enthusiast who enjoyed shooting, and he was a former member of the Middleport Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by his children, Brenda Christie of Wrights Corners, Bobbie (Fred) Baldwin of Middleport, and Erin (Floyd) Nichols of West Virginia; his brother, James (Elena) Goodell of Florida; his sister, Susan (David) Lester of Newfane; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. Private service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Niagara County SPCA, 2100 Lockport Road, Niagara Falls NY 14304.

Louis A. Verelli, 88, of Middleport, passed away May 6, 2020 at his home. He was born May 5, 1932 in Middleport to the late Lorenzo and Laura (Nicolia) Verelli.

Louis served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, from 1952 to 1954. He owned and operated Verelli Car Dealership from 1955 to 2015. Louis was a member of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in Middleport for many years.

In addition to his parents, Louis was predeceased by his wife, Edda (Stanley) Verelli on June 29, 2016; and his daughter, Faith Ann Lee in December 2019.

Louis is survived by his granddaughters, Patricia (late Kenneth) McCarthy and Bridget (Bradley) Rowan; great-grandchildren, Abbey and Shawn McCarthy, and Nicole (Elmo) Rowan-Garza; and great-great-grandchildren, Bryan, Eliyah, Ean and Emilee Garza.

Private burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Medina at the convenience of the family.

Tyanna Green

Tyanna D. Green, 25, of Albion, died suddenly May 1, 2020.

She was born April 15, 1995 in Medina, a daughter of Lisa Santiago and the late Kevin Green. Tyanna will be remembered for lighting up a room with her infectious smile and her giggle.

In addition to her father, Tyanna was predeceased by her grandparents, Nereida Santiago, Mary and Thomas Green.

She is survived by her loving family: son, Winston Lockhart Jr.; mother, Lisa Santiago; brothers, Charles (Amie) Santiago, Yehudah Davis Jr. and Kevin Green Jr.; sisters, Honesty Green, Destiny Green and Kayla Spry; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for Tyanna will be held at a later date.
