Ruth A. Ziemer

Ruth and Rolf traveled the world together and I am forever grateful to him for the love and care he gave my Mom throughout their time together. He gave her the life she dreamed of.
Ruth was born August 20, 1927 in New Castle, PA to Floyd and Katherine Childs. She worked at Syracuse University as a computer coordinator for the Department of Sponsored Programs.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Rolf, daughter Brenda (Marc) Hooper of Kelseyville, CA, and brother, David (Jeanette) Childs of Kechi, KS.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Linda (Everett) Davis, Doris (Charles) Foss and her brother, Robert (Joyce) Childs.
My Mother and I had 70 years together. She taught me how to have faith, how to laugh and smile, how to work through sadness. She showed me what prejudice looks like, the importance of always telling the truth. My mother taught me how to love.
I have so many wonderful memories of her, but my favorite goes back to when I was in third grade. My elementary school always had a Halloween party, but that year I didn’t want to go, until, of course, the very last minute. My mother lovingly came to the rescue and suggested possible costumes. No, I didn’t want to be Casper the Ghost and no I didn’t want to be a witch.
After much back and forth, my mother looked in the closet and pulled out a box. She put me into that box with only my head and legs outside of it. Then she gift-wrapped the box and put on a tag, “To: Mr. Towne” who was the school principal. She loaded me into the backseat of the car (lying down) and off we went to the school. After pulling me out of the car, we went in. When the third graders paraded across the stage, I found to my joy and dismay that I won. Needless to say, it was somewhat difficult to choose my prize from the huge bag of possibilities when my hands were stuck inside the box. That was my Mom, always there for me.
But, I wasn’t there for my Mother when she died of Covid-19. I couldn’t be as she was in a hospital in Syracuse. I had to say goodbye to her via FaceTime. I had to attend her funeral via FaceTime. No last kiss, no hug, no holding her hand. Just the lingering picture in my mind as the nurses removed her oxygen tube because there was nothing else to be done.
I couldn’t be there for my stepfather, either. I have the photo above of my mother, and a handblown glass heart with some of her ashes on the table next to my favorite reading chair. Sometimes I can barely look at it, my heart is so broken.

Predeceased by son-in-law, Shelly Goudreau; daughter, Beverley Visscher (Mark); siblings: Gary DeFrank and Roger DeFrancesco (Kathy).
Beyond the racing world, Joe’s main priority was his family which he loved wholeheartedly. Joe and Beryl loved gardening and cooking together. They spent their retirement years enjoying the beauty of the Adirondacks, from their lovely home Butternut Hill in Lake Pleasant. From the garden came many vegetables and herbs to complete the home cooked pasta dishes the family enjoyed so much.
Joe fell in love with harness racing at Batavia Downs and that is where he met his mentor and lifelong friend, Don D’Andrea. In 1956 Don recommended to the late Hall of Famer Jim Lynch, that Joe be given a chance to be an assistant in the race office at Hilliard’s Raceway in Ohio. That was just the start of a long career that took him to the race office at other tracks, including Baltimore Raceway, Green Mountain Park, Grandview Raceway, Painesville Raceway, Northfield Park, Windsor Raceway, Freehold, Brandywine and Ponce DeLeon. Joe was hired by the late Delvin Miller to help start The Meadows in 1963. In 1976 while Joe was working as the director of racing at Windsor Raceway Bob Quigley enticed him to leave to become the Director of Racing at a new racetrack across the Hudson River from New York City; The Meadowlands Racetrack which came under the auspices of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. Joe encouraged a young driver named John Campbell to join him in leaving Windsor and ply his trade at the Big M, resulting in both eventually being honored with induction into harness racing’s Hall of Fame in Goshen, NY. While at the Meadowlands, Joe created races such as the Meadowlands Pace and Woodrow Wilson, both of which offered purses of more than $1 million. The Woodrow Wilson purse also reached as high as $2 million, the most ever offered in the sport. He was also instrumental in bringing the Hambletonian from the Midwest to the Meadowlands in 1981.
In addition to his duties at the Meadowlands, when Garden State Park Racetrack in Cherry Hill, New Jersey opened in 1985, Joe was named director of racing. One of the major races he brought to that track was the 1988 March of Dimes Trot. The field included the North American star Mack Lobell and foreign standout Ourasi, with the event turning out to be what many consider to be the sport’s greatest race ever. Joe was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994, with presenter Stan Bergstein, a former race secretary himself, noting “I realized quickly and instinctively that he was going places. I simply underestimated how far he was going, how fast he was going, and how impressively he would get there.” “No one in our business has mastered his craft more completely, elevated its power and stature, introduced more new ideas, commanded more respect or ruled with such absolute power as the man we now honor.” Throughout the years Joe received many awards which honored his talent and innovative style for the sport of Harness Racing which he loved so much.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 12-2 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 19, 2020 at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. A funeral home service will be conducted following calling hours at 2 p.m. A private burial with military honors will be held in the spring in Lake Pleasant, New York In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation (Parkinson’s research) or The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame, Goshen NY.

Leona Leofsky

After graduating Albion High School in 1951 Leona worked for a while at the Albion Pennysaver (weekly). But it was while working at Lipton Soup that she met the love of her life, Ted Leofsky, with whom she shared 56 years. They married in 1953 and moved to Chester County in 1954 where they raised a family. After Ted retired, they relocated to Lancaster in 2003.
In addition to raising 8 children in East Fallowfield Township (along with various chickens, cats, guinea hens and parakeets) Leona was active in local social justice initiatives. She was a founding member of a Women’s Interfaith coalition, worked to desegregate schools in Coatesville, Pa., served on the Executive Committee of the local NAACP chapter and was Minority Inspector for the local election board. Leona was a lifelong spiritual seeker who converted to Catholicism as a teenager. She served as one of the first female lectors of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Coatesville. One way Leona used the resources she had to help others was by hosting inner-city New York youths, through the Fresh Air Fund for several weeks each summer, developing relationships that would be maintained for more than 60 years.
While Leona was not afforded the opportunity of a college education, she was an autodidact who instilled a love of reading, curiosity and continual learning in her children. Her lifelong passions and personal interests include photography, flowers, organic gardening, cats (especially Peachie), clouds, seeing beauty and seeking human justice. She loved music and was a gifted whistler. Her children fondly remember the lyrics to many musicals and folk music that constantly played in the Leofsky household.
Preceding her in death were her spouse, Theodore R. Leofsky; son, John Paul Leofsky; and daughter, Loretta Aileen Leofsky. Also grandson, Jesse Farrell; brother, Reed Miller; and beloved sister and best friend, Gerry Schuck. Survivors include daughters: Jeanie Farrell, Karyn Anderson, Josephine Matey and Marina Rose; sons: Joseph Leofsky and Anthony Leofsky; granddaughters: April Wood, Sandra Brandt, Jamie Matey, Justine Matey and Taylor Leofsky; grandsons: Benton Anderson, Hiroshi Hyashi, Adam Leofsky, Cameron Leofsky, EJ Leofsky and Jerin Leofsky; great-grandchildren: Roman, Dahlia, Diallo, Soraya, Samantha and Zyla; sister, Darleene Johnson; brother, Garland Miller.
A virtual memorial service will be held on Sat., Dec. 12, 2020 at 4 p.m. with visitation beginning at 3:30 p.m. To receive information on Leona’s virtual memorial service, please visit www.wentzfuneralhome.com.
