Niagara Nationals sweep twin bill

The Niagara Nationals swept a doubleheader from the Great Lakes Gators by the scores of 5-0 and 5-1 on Sunday.

Strong pitching performances by Aiden Johnston (Oakfield-Alabama) and Chris Goyette (Medina) along with stellar defensive play from Brian Fry (Medina) paced the Nationals.

In game one, Johnston went the distance on the mound pitching a three hitter with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

Offensively, the Nationals were led by Fry who hit 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs and Nate Sherman (Medina) who went 2 for 2 with 1 run scored and drove in 2 runs.

In game two, Goyette was masterful on the mound scattering 3 hits over 5 innings in his first outing of the season. He struck out 3 and only walked one. Trevor Luthart (Medina) pitched the final two stanzas retiring all 6 Gators he faced.

Offensively, the Nationals were led by Fry who was 3-3 with a double and Goyette who had two hits and a run batted in. Sam Murphy (St. Joe’s) chipped in with a walk and a double.

In the last three games played, Nationals pitchers have combined to only walk 2 batters in 21 innings. With the wins the Nationals move to 4-0 on the season. They travel to EMW on Tuesday.
