Newfane girls top Albion to take N-O lead
Moving into first place by a half game, Newfane downed visiting Albion 47-30 in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball contest this evening.
Newfane improves to 6-1 with the win and moves just ahead of 5-1 Akron whose game against Barker was postponed as school was cancelled at Akron today due to the weather.
Anna Chunco scored a game high 16 points, including four threes, to lead the way for Newfane. Sienna Bowers added 9, Ah-Leena Golden 7, Kameryn Boyer 5. Julia Noonan and Stephanie Chunco 4 and Bailee Patcyk 2.
Leah Pawlak scored 10, Cami London 8, Julia Knight 6, Kenzi Snook 4 and Melia Prince 2 for Albion.
Newfane jumped out to a 17-12 first quarter lead as Anna Chunco scored 7 and Boyer and Bowers 4 each. London netted 6 and Knight 4 to pace Albion during that stretch.
Newfane maintained a narrow 21-18 advantage at the half after a low scoring second period.
Albion though battled back to grab the lead twice early in the third period at 22-21 and again at 24-23 on baskets by London and Snook.
However, Anna Chunco answered with back-to-back threes to put Newfane back on top to stay at 29-24. Those tallies ignited an 11-2 run to close the period which put the Lady Panthers up by 8, 34-26.
Newfane then closed out the win by outpointing Albion 13-4 in the final period as six players contributed to the scoring.
Albion is now 1-6 in N-O action.
More weather postponements
The Wilson at Roy-Hart N-O game and the Lyndonville at Medina and Holley at Arts non league contests were also postponed as both Roy-Hart and Medina cancelled after school activities due to the weather. The Roy-Hart at Wilson and Akron at Barker N-O boys games were also both postponed.
