Nationals go 2-1 to open East-West Battle

Rebounding from an opening round loss, the Niagara Nationals scored a pair of victories today in the East-West Battle baseball tournament being held in Central New York.

The Nationals dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to the Webster Warthogs in the tournament’s first game.

Bouncing back, the Nationals bested the WNY Titans 7-4 as Joe Dell’oso had 3 hits and Korey Canton 2.

The Nationals scored 2 quick runs in the first inning as Liam Ward banged out a triple. A double by Canton later highlighted a 2 run third inning.

Medina’s Brian Fry had 2 hits for the Titans.

The Nationals then nipped the Hayner Academy Barnstormers 8-7 in 8 innings.

The Nationals scored 3 times in the eighth to claim the win on a fielders choice play off the bat of Canton and RBI singles by Dell’oso and Ward.

Earlier, the Nationals scored 5 times in the second inning on a double by Sam Murphy and singles by Canton, Dell’oso, Ward and Mitchell Holtz.

The Nationals continue tourney competition at 9 a.m. Sunday.
