Niagara-Orleans League field hockey, volleyball and cross-country titles will all be decided this coming week as the regular season comes to an end.

Undefeated (10-0) defending champion Akron has already clinched at least a tie for the field hockey title and now needs only a win over Newfane on Monday to claim the crown outright.

Second place will also be on the line Monday as Medina (7-3) hosts Barker (8-2) at 7 p.m. at Vets Park.

Two matches on Wednesday will determine the N-O League’s volleyball champion or champions. Those matches will have 8-1 Akron vs. 7-2 Wilson and 7-2 Roy-Hart vs. 3-6 Newfane. Wins by Wilson and Roy-Hart would result in tri champions. Akron is the defending champion.

The N-O cross-country champions will be decided at the annual All-League meet on Saturday morning at Lakeside Beach State Park with the varsity races scheduled to begin at 11.

The regular season in the boys’ competition ended in a logjam with Akron, Barker and Newfane all deadlocked for first place at 5-1.

On the girls side, Newfane finished the regular season at 6-0 followed closely by Barker at 5-1.

The Barker boys and Newfane girls teams are the defending champions.

Barker Has New Nickname
Known for decades as the Raiders, Barker High’s sports teams will now be known as the Bulldogs. The change in nicknames is in keeping with the State Education Department’s directive that schools must stop using Native American references in team names, logos and mascots by the end of this school year,.
