N-O boys romp to victory over G-R
In a free wheeling, high scoring, three-point shot filled contest, the Niagara-Orleans League raced to a record setting 117-95 victory over the Genesee Region League in the 16th annual senior boys basketball game between the two leagues this evening at Medina.
Medina’s Jason Hellwig poured in a game high 22 points to lead the attack for the N-O which shattered the record for most points in the series besting the old mark of 102 set in 2005 in the N-O’s 102-60 victory.
Kyle Bradley (Wilson) netted 18 for the N-O as Evan Shank (Wilson) had 11, Clayton Stanton (Albion) and Kyle Burdick (Newfane) 10, Tom Callaghan (Barker) and Dylanta Carson (CSAT) 9, Des Blackmon (Albion) 8, Bryan Locke (CSAT) 7, Joe Littere (Wil;son) 6, Austin Loyd (Albion) 5 and Larson Sundown (Akron) 2. The N-O roster also included Nelson Andrade (Roy-Hart).
Tyler Roberts (Wheatland-Chili) scored 21 and Josh Johnson (Notre Dame) 19 to set the pace for the G-R as Ryan Emery (Oakfield-Alabama) added 14, Derek Walker (Attica) 11, Ryan Cummings (Oakfield-Alabama) 10, Nick Magin (Byron-Bergen) 9, Jake Riggs (Alexander) 6 and Tyler Laird (Alexander) 5. The G-R lineup also included Riley Iqbal and Justin Barrett from Kendall.
In all the wild contest saw a total of 31 made three’s including 17 by the G-R and 14 by the N-O.
The N-O took charge at the outset roaring out to a 19 point, 26-7, lead in the first 10 minutes.
Hellwig scored 7 on a three-point play and a pair of rebound buckets, Bradley 7 on a three, a layup and two free throws, Blackmon 5 on a three and a layup and Callaghan 4 on a layup and a rebound basket, to key that early uprising.
Keeping the momentum, the N-O maintained a commanding 22 point, 63-41, advantage at the end of the high scoring 20 minute half.
Hellwig had a total of 15, Bradley 11 (three threes), Blackmon 8 (two threes), Callaghan 6 and Carson, Burdick and Shank 5 (each with a three) in the half.
Roberts scored 12 (three threes) and Johnson 11 to lead the G-R in the half.
Both teams kept the scoreboard working at high speed in the second half which saw the G-R lead by as many as 26 at 90-64, after a rebound bucket and a three by Burdick and a three-point play by Hellwig.
Stanton scored 8 and Hellwig 7 for the N-O in the half while Emery netted 12 and Walker 11 for the G-R.
The victory boosts the N-O lead in the series to 11-5.
