Mustangs win soccer sectional opener

A quick two goal scoring burst early in the second half  keyed No. 7 seed Medina/Lyndonville to a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Salamanca/Cattaraugus Little Valley this afternoon in the opening round of the Section VI Class B2 boys soccer playoffs at Vets Park.

Leading by a narrow 1-0 margin, the Mustangs pulled away as Matt Hess scored off an assist from Vassilios Bitsas at 28:28 of the second half and Elian Gonzalez quickly followed up with a tally on a direct kick at 25:50.

The two goals proved big as Salamanca/Cattaraugus Little Valley scored just five minutes later on a goal by Justin Pincoski.

The Mustangs grabbed a 1-0 lead when Hess scored with just 3:45 remaining in the first half.

Now at 11-6, Medina/Lyndonville next visits No. 2 MST Seneca on Thursday.

In other Class B2 games, No. 8 Akron blanked No. 9 Eden 2-0 on goals by Ethan Martin and Cody Blasko, No. 3 Wilson shutout No. 14 Olmsted 5-0 as Cesar Carlin scored 4 goals and No. 13 Roy-Hart lost 3-0 at No. 4 Southwestern.

In a Class B1 opener No. 10 Albion dropped a narrow 1-0 decision at No. 7 Alden as Nate Newer netted the lone goal for the Bulldogs.
