A big third period scoring surge keyed Medina to a 74-61 victory over visiting Roy-Hart this evening keeping the Mustangs tied with idle Newfane for the Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball lead at 7-1.

Trailing by four, 31-27, early in the third period, Medina put together a big 24-8 burst to close the stanza and rally into the lead for good by a 51-29 margin at the three-quarter mark.

Jalin Cooper scored 10 to lead that decisive uprising as Brian Fry and Alex Alls both added 4 and Mason Lewis and Brendan Luthart 3.

An 8-0 run, which included a layup, a rebound bucket and two free throws by Cooper and a layup by Lewis, ignited that uprising rallying Medina into a 35-31 lead. A three by Luthart upped the lead to 10, 47-37, and a late jumper by Fry gave the Mustangs a 12 point lead at the three-quarter mark.

Cooper finished with 25 as Fry had 10, Luthart 9, Izaiah Rhim 8, Lewis and Allis 7, Tyler Chinn 5, Nate Sherman 2 and Jorge Phillips 1.

Jake Bruning took game high honors for Roy-Hart with 26 as Noah Kindron had 18, Charlie Bruning 7, Charlie Brigham 5, Ben White 3 and Blake Halstead 2.

Medina grabbed a narrow 13-12 lead at the end of the first period but Roy-Hart opened the second stanza with an 11-3 run ignited by two layups off turnovers by Jake Bruning and one by Kindron to take a seven point, 23-16, lead.

The Mustangs though answered back with an 11-3 run of their own highlighted by layups off steals by Cooper and Lewis, to regain a 27-26 lead.

However, the Rams moved back onto a slender 28-27 lead at the half on a late layup by Halstead.

The Rams upped the lead to 31-27 at the outset of the third period after a pair of free throws by Kindron and a rebound basket by Jake Bruning but Medina came storming back with the deciding 24-8 run to lock up the victory.

The victory was a near carbon copy of the earlier season meeting between the teams when Medina erased a one point, 32-31, half-time deficit by erupting for a 30-7 third period scoring surge to key an 80-53 win.

Roy-Hart is now 2-6 in N-O action.
