Mustangs top Raiders in N-O opener

Steadily pulling away, Medina opened defense of its Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball title with a 71-42 victory over host Barker this evening.

Brian Fry scored 20 and Jarin Rhim 17 to lead the way for Medina as Tyler Chinn added 11, Joe Cecchini 9, Dontae Rhim 8 and Christian Drisdom 6. (Click here to see Medina’s Dontea Rhim score off the top shot.)

Devonte Hill scored 11 and Shane Gerhardt 10 to pace Barker as Joey Brandt had 9, Nicholas Guevara, Nathan Meza Ray and Cole Ecker 3 each, Evan Taylor 2 and Robert Mason 1. (Click here to see Barker’s Devonte Hill score on a turnaround jumper.)

Medina jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead as Fry scored 8 and Chinn 7.

Getting excellent results from a pressing defense and a fast break offense, the Mustangs then used a 25-10 second period scoring edge to hike their advantage to 24, 43-19, at the half.

Jarin Rhim scored 12 and Fry 8, including a pair of threes, to spark the Mustangs during that stretch.

The Mustangs maintained a commanding 30 point, 62-32, lead at the three-quarter mark.

Jarin Rhim scored 5 as Chinn, Cecchini and Dontae Rhim 4 each in the stanza.

Medina is now 2-2 overall.

Barker is 0-1 in the league.

Salamanca 91, Roy-Hart 55

Canyon Wood scored 17, Reed Albee 13 and Jamel Johnson Jr. 10 for Roy-Hart in the 91-55 non league loss at Salamanca which led 46-26 at half-time.
