Mustangs to host Burgard Wednesday

Boasting a good returning nucleus, Medina is prepping for Wednesday’s home opener against Burgard, the first of four non league tests before the Mustangs begin Niagara-Orleans League competition at Newfane on December 19.

Senior Jason Hellwig, who averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds last year, and junior Dylan Lewis, who averaged 9.5 points, lead Medina’s veteran contingent which also includes seniors Aaron Feltz, David Garrow, Brennan Zinkievich and Devonte Howard along with junior Justin Morgan.

The Mustangs lineup also includes juniors Tyler Ames, Brad McPherson, Jared Zinkievich and freshman Jalin Cooper.

“I like this group,” said Coach Tom Forrestel. “I’m happy with the off season work they put in. They’ve got nice team chemistry and they have a high basketball IQ. I think we’ll be pretty good in transition. The key will be how well we play in a half court set. We have to play patient and unselfish.”

Medina posted a 9-5 N-O record last year to finish a distance second to undefeated (14-0) champion Barker. Overall the Mustangs went 12-7.

“I think it will be a very competitive league,” said Forrestel. “I think the league is wide open.”
