It is only week three but sole possession of the B East Division lead will be on the line as Medina/Lyndonville hosts defending champion Alden in a key contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Currently sharing the division lead at 2-0, the Mustangs have defeated Barker/Roy-Hart 56-24 and Lackawanna 48-6 while the Bulldogs have downed Depew 40-19 and Albion 28-18.

“This is a very big test for us early on in our schedule,” said Mustangs Coach Eric Valley. “Alden has been a powerhouse in our league for quite a while, and they know how to win. They are obviously very well coached and do not make a lot of errors, so we need to be on top of our game.”

The Mustangs high scoring offense has featured touchdowns by eight different players to date including 4 by Jake Cotter, 3 by Jalin Cooper, 2 by Eric Neace and 1 each by Izaiah Rhim, Brendan Luthart, Dustin Joy, Ronnie Koonce and Lucas Porter.

The Bulldogs attack is spearheaded by the 1-2 combination of quarterback Brandon Cybulski, who has passed for 3 touchdowns and run for another, and speedy running back Christian Snell who has scored a total of 5 touchdowns including 3 rushing, 1 receiving and 1 on a kickoff return.

“Our defense has to continue to play well and create opportunities for our offense. Alden has a very good running back that we need to contain as well. Offensively we need to spread the ball around and execute,” said Valley. “We need to minimize mistakes, penalties and turnovers if we want to win. It is a great opportunity for our team to face such a good opponent for our home opener.”

Alden holds a 10-5 lead in the all-time series winning the last six meetings including a 35-0 victory last fall. The Mustangs last win over the Bulldogs was in 2007 by a score of 14-0.

Albion hosts Barker/Roy-Hart
Albion will be looking to earn victory No. 1 on the young season as the Purple Eagles host Barker/Roy-Hart at 7 p.m. Friday in another B East Division game.

Albion is 0-1 in the division and 0-2 overall while Barker/Roy-Hart is 0-1, 1-1.

The Purple Eagles hold a 3-1 lead in the short series including a 30-13 victory last year.

Holley faces Alexander
The weekend’s football schedule gets off to an early start as Holley will face Alexander in a Genesee Region League contest at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Pembroke.

The contest will be the league opener for Holley, which is 1-1 to date against a pair of non league foes, while Alexander is 2-0 in the league including a key 14-6 victory over rival Attica last week. The Trojans also romped past Notre Dame 45-15 in the season opener.
