Mustangs surge past Warriors in B1 contest

Moving on top to stay with a big third quarter scoring burst, No. 8 seed Medina went on to defeat visiting No. 9 Tonawanda 68-60 this evening in the pre quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B1 boys basketball playoffs.

Trailing 30-29 at the half, Medina put together a 22-14 third period scoring surge to take the lead for good by a 51-44 margin at the three-quarter mark.

Tyler Chinn led the Mustangs decisive rally with 10 points on two threes and a pair of layups. Jarin Rhim added six on two layups and a pair of free throws and Brian Fry six on a three, a layup and a free throw.

The Mustangs built the advantage to 12, 57-45, a minute and a half into the final period after a layup by Chinn followed by a rebound basket and a layup by Christian Drisdom.

Tonawanda did rally back to within six, 59-53, midway through the period but the Warriors would get no closer.

A rebound basket by Joe Cecchini followed by two free throws and a layup by Fry put the Mustangs back up by nine, 63-54, with 2:40 remaining. A layup by Cecchini and two free throws by Chinn then put a lock on the win.

Chinn finished with 20, Fry 19, Jarin Rhim 14 (click here to see a layup by Rhim), Cecchini 7 and Dontae Rhim and Drisdom 4 for the Mustangs.

Trevin Boling scored 19, David Perry 15 and J.J. Velazquez 11 for Tonawanda which held narrow leads of 17-16 after the first period and 30-29 at the half.

Medina, which improves to 12-9, next visits top seeded Bennett in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Tonawanda finishes the season at 9-12.
