Mustangs’ strong finish bests Panthers

Coming on strong down the stretch, defending champion Medina downed visiting Newfane 47-37 in a Niagara-Orleans League game this evening.

Breaking away from a 29-29 deadlocked, Medina outscored Newfane 18-8 in the decisive final period to claim the win and improve to 2-0 in N-O action.

Anthony Bowman scored 8 and Joe Cecchini and Jarin Rhim 4 each to lead the Mustangs key stretch run.

Bowman finished with 16, Rhim 14, Cecchini 6, Cayden Lilleby and Robert Arnold 4 and Justin Pitts 3.

Evan Meyers scored 16 and Landen Braman 12 for Newfane which led 11-6 after one period and 20-19 at the half.

Medina edged Newfane 10-9 in the third period to rally into the 29-29 tie. Rhim netted 4 during that stretch.

Newfane is now 1-2.

Wilson 55, Albion 45

Improving to 3-1 in N-O action, Wilson topped visiting Albion 55-45 as Jake Austin scored 13, Matt Fox 11 and Paul Smith 10.

Caleb Fox scored a game high 15 and Javon Jones netted 8 for Albion which is 0-2 in league play.

Wilson held leads of 27-15 at the half and 37-29 after three quarters.

Albion though came battling back down the stretch cutting the deficit to three, 47-44, as Aquil Gaffney scored 5 points and Jones and Fox both hit key threes.

However, Wilson turned back the challenge as 8 late free throws put a lock on the win for the Lakemen.

Akron 60, Barker 54 (OT)
Akron outscored Barker 11-5 in the four minute overtime to claim a 60-54 N-O win.

Trace Hill scored 15, Andrew Romesser 12 and Brodie Hibbard 10 for Akron which led 21-18 at the half.

Barker rallied into a 40-32 lead at the end of the third period but Akron used a 17-9 fourth quarter scoring edge to pull into a 49-49 tie and force overtime.

Akron is now 1-1 and Barker 1-3 in N-O action.
