Pounding out a total of 17 hits, No. 6 seed Medina romped to a 19-1 victory over host No. 3 Burgard this afternoon in a Section VI Class B1 quarterfinal game that took two days to complete.

Medina jumped out to a 8-1 lead on Wednesday before stormy weather forced play to be suspended in the fourth inning.

Setting the tone at the outset Medina scored three quick runs in the first inning on a two-run triple by Matt Riemer and an RBI fielders choice play off the bat of Jason Hellwig. A walk and a single by Justin Morgan set up the threat.

The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the second on an RBI triple by Sam Crowley, a sacrifice bunt by Josh Scroger and a wild pitch.

The Mustang bats stayed hot when play resumed this afternoon as a double by Hayden Allis and singles by Crowley, Riemer and Adam Hoot highlighted a five run fifth inning.

The Mustangs added six more in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double by Morgan and an RBI double by Riemer. Crowley, Scroger, Hoot and Devonte Howard also all chipped in with singles.

Crowley and Riemer both had a total of four hits as Morgan, Howard and Hoot each had two.

Hellwig pitched the final four innings today allowing no hits and striking out nine.

Riemer hurled the first three frames on Wednesday.

“It was a good solid performance all the way around,” said Medina Coach Eric Hellwig. “I’m pleased where we are right now.”

Medina now visits No. 2 Fredonia in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday.
