Breaking away from a scoreless deadlock, Medina exploded for five touchdowns over the final 16 minutes to defeat host Lew-Port 36-0 this evening in a key B North Division game.

Quarterback Jason Hellwig snapped the 0-0 deadlock when he hooked up with Dylan Lewis for a 12 yard touchdown pass with four minutes to go in the third quarter. Hellwig tacked on the two-point conversion with a pass to Brandon Schoolcraft.

The Mustangs doubled their advantage to 16-0 less than three minutes later when Devin Joy scored on a 39 yard touchdown run and Hellwig passed to Lewis for the two-point conversion.

Medina then closed out the victory with a flurry of three touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game on scoring runs of 34 and 68 yards by Brett Pecoraro and 22 by Joy. Pecoraro also added the two-point conversion run after his first score.

Pecoraro finished with a total of 155 yards rushing and Joy 112 yards.

The Mustangs defensive unit, which came up with a key goal line stand in the first half to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard, also got second half pass interceptions by Austin Buckland and Pecoraro, both of which set up touchdowns.

The victory boosts Medina’s record to 3-2 in the division and 4-2 overall and pulls Medina even with Albion (3-2, 4-2) in the battle for third place and a possible sectional playoff berth.

The Mustangs will close out the B North campaign by hosting the rival Purple Eagles next Friday night.
