Mustangs roll past Lakemen to hold N-O lead

Leading from wire-to-wire, defending champion Medina rolled to a 74-44 victory over visiting Wilson this evening to maintain a one game lead atop the Niagara-Orleans League standings at 9-0.

Johnny Salone and Jalin Cooper both scored 17 and Vincent Montague 10 to lead the Medina offense as Mason Lewis added 7, Brendan Luthart 6, Izaiah Rhim 5, Trenton Jones 4, Alex Allis 3 and Tyrellis Atkins 2.

Connor Seeley and Steve Frerichs both scored 12 for Wilson, which slips to 6-4, as Justin Daul added 8, Nate Fox, Jonah Miller and Mac Musall 3, Steve Lewis 2 and Mike Pazik 1.

Medina jumped out to a 13-3 lead at the outset, a run capped off by back-to-back threes by Luthart. Another three by Allis and a layup by Cooper helped keep the Mustangs up by 9, 18-11 at the end of the period.

Wilson did close to within 4, 20-16, early in the second period after a three by Daul and a layup by Frerichs but the Lakemen would get no closer.

Medina answered with a decisive 15-3 run to close the period and open up a 16 point, 35-19, advantage at the half. Montague had a jumper and a layup, Rhim a pair of rebound buckets, Lewis a three, Cooper a jumper and Salone a layup during that run.

Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then went on a 13-5 run over the first four and a half minutes of the third period to extend the lead to 24 at 48-24. Salone had 8 and Cooper 4 to spearhead that uprising.

Salone had a total of 10 and Cooper 6 in the period which ended with Medina up by 18, 52-34.

The Mustangs extended the advantage to 30, 68-38, midway through the final period after a 16-4 run including 4 each by Jones and Montague.

Medina will next host runner-up Newfane in a key contest at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Medina also defeated Wilson in the JV game 46-41 as Tyler Chinn scored 15, Nate Sherman 12 and Brian Fry 11.

Newfane 65, Barker 49
Newfane stayed just a game off the pace at 8-1 by downing Barker (4-5) 65-49.

Kyle DeVoogel scored 26 and Max Weber 16 for Newfane which led 35-25 at the half.

Nate Luckman scored 26 for Barker.
