Mustangs QB is Connolly Cup finalist

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Medina High senior quarterback Xander Payne is one of 10 finalists for the Connolly Cup Award which is given annually to the Western New York High School Player of the Year. The winner will be announced on December 8. Payne has helped lead the Mustangs to an 11-0 record to date, a Section VI Class C championship and a first ever berth in the state playoffs. He has thrown for 1,386 yards and a school record 21 touchdowns and rushed for 394 yards and 7 touchdowns. Payne and his Mustang teammates will face East Rochester/Gananda in the Class C Far West Regional game at noon Saturday at Williamsville South High School. Medina has had one Connolly Cup recipient and that was Jim Snyder who helped lead the Mustangs to a 10-0 Section VI championship season in 1988.
