Mustangs QB earns MVP honor at Ultimate 100 Football Camp
Medina High quarterback Jason Hellwig, who will be a senior this fall, was named 7-on-7 MVP at the National Underclassmen’s (NUC) Midwest Ultimate 100 Football Camp which was held Sunday in Fairfield, Ohio.
Hellwig, who threw 13 touchdown passes for Medina last fall to become the Mustangs career TD passing leader with a total of 29, led his team to touchdowns on each of his four drives during round-robin competition (there were five QBs on each team, so it was important to make the most of each series he got).
Hellwig threw for the go-ahead touchdown in his team’s 21-19 semifinal win. Then in the championship game, he threw for a touchdown with no time remaining to tie the score at 12-12 and send the game into overtime. His team eventually lost the championship, 18-12.
Hellwig was competing with and against 100 other rising seniors from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Hellwig has been invited to the NUC’s final all-star camp of the summer, NUC Top Prospect Elite Camp. Recent past participants of that camp include Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariotta, and Eric Ebron.
