Tuning up for the upcoming sectionals, Medina defeated Starpoint 6-3 this afternoon at Vets Park in a non league game to complete a 16-4 regular season.

Trailing 1-0, Medina took the lead for good by scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back two out RBI singles by winning pitcher Jason Hellwig and Kyle Herman.

Medina made it 3-1 with an unearned run in the fourth as Quentin Adkins singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Morgan and came home on an error.

The Mustangs upped the lead to 6-1 by tacking on 3 runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Herman and an RBI sacrifice fly by Matt Riemer. A single by Josh Scroger, an error and a bunt single by Hellwig loaded the bases to set up the threat.

Medina’s Quentin Adkins slides into third as Starpoint’s Kevin Zientara takes the throw.

Hellwig went the distance on the mound giving up 6 hits and striking out 15. He struck out the side in the second and sixth innings and fanned two in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh frames. The biggest of those strikeouts ended the sixth inning as the Spartans left runners stranded at second and third.
