Mustangs post win over Panthers

Staying within two games of the top spot, Medina bested visiting Newfane 58-47 this evening in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game.

Justin Morgan scored 19, Jason Hellwig 12 and Dylan Lewis 10 to lead the offense for Medina which improves to 6-2 in N-O competition. Brennan Zinkievich added 8, Jalin Cooper 5 and David Garrow and Devonte Howard 2 each for the Mustangs.

Kyle Burdick netted 10 and Tyler Jordan and David Krull 9 each for Newfane which slips to 2-6.

Leading by a narrow 14-12 margin early in the second quarter, Medina put together a key 13-0 run to open up some breathing room.

Back-to-back layups by Morgan and Hellwig ignited that uprising which also included a three by Lewis, a jumper by Zinkievich and s layup by Cooper vaulting Medina out to 15 point, 44-27 advantage.

Rebound buckets by Garrow and Zinkieivch helped keep the Mustangs up by 16, 33-17, at the half. In all seven different players contributed baskets to the Mustangs big quarter.

The Mustangs maintained a 13 point, 44-31, advantage at the three-quarter mark as Morgan had two threes and layup and Zinkievich a three in the third period.

Newfane could get no closer than 10 at 50-40 in the final stanza as two threes by Morgan, one by Lewis and a three-point play by Hellwig helped Medina put a lock on the victory.

Medina next visits Barker at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Notre Dame 55, Holley 37

Jumping out to a 35-16 halftime advantage, Notre Dame went on to defeat host Holley 55-37 this evening in a Genesee Region League game.

Hunter DeFelice scored 12, Josh Porter 9 and Zach Vaccarelli 8 for Holley. Porter also grabbed off 7 rebounds.
