Mustangs post key win over Rams

Taking over sole possession of second place, Medina bested visiting Roy-Hart 58-48 this evening in a key Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game.

In other N-O action, Albion (4-5) defeated visiting Wilson (2-5) 65-54, front-running Barker (8-0) romped past visiting Akron (1-7) 66-36 and Newfane (3-6) downed CSAT (4-4) 59-51.

Dylan Lewis poured in a career high 27 points, including six threes, to spearhead the attack for Medina which improves to 6-2 in N-O action and 9-3 overall.

Munjie Brown added 13 for the Mustangs as Cedric Griffith chipped in with 6, Kevin Arnold 5, Jason Hellwig 3 and Ben McPherson and Josh Cuadrado 2.

Andy Xapsos tallied 15, Cody Breedlove 12, DaRon Woods 10 and Alex Stoddard 8 for Roy-Hart which slips to 4-3.

Medina jumped out to a 15-4 advantage at the outset, a lead the Mustangs never relinquished.

Two threes and a two by Lewis sparked that uprising which also included a three by Arnold and buckets by Brown and McPherson.

The teams then traded scores throughout the second period which ended with Medina up by nine at 29-20. Lewis again had two threes and a two to lead the Mustangs while Breedlove hit two threes for the Rams.

The sea-saw scoring continued in the third period as Medina maintained a nine point 42-33 advantage at the three-quarter mark.

For the third straight quarter Lewis had two threes and a two to spark the Mustangs while Stoddard had three buckets and Breedlove two to keep the Rams in contention.

The Mustangs finally opened up a little breathing room early in the final period as Brown scored seven straight points on a three-point play, two free throws and a jumper to boost the lead to 15 at 49-34.

Xapsos answered with seven, including a three, and Woods five, including a three, down the stretch for Roy-Hart but the Rams could get no closer than nine as the Mustangs final seven points came from the free throw line including three by Lewis and two each by Brown and Arnold.

Albion 65, Wilson 54
Ryan Fannin had a huge 28 point, 14 rebound night to lead Albion past Wilson 65-54.

Austin Loyd, Manny Thompson and Connor Barleben each added 7, Des Blackmon 5 and Alex Bison 4 for the Purple Eagles.

Kyle Bradley paced Wilson with 20.

Leading by a narrow 15-14 margin after one quarter, Albion outpointed Wilson 13-5 in the second quarter to open up a 28-19 half-time advantage. The Purple Eagles maintained a 40-35 lead at the three-quarter mark.

Fannin scored 7 in the second quarter and 8 more in the third to lead that Albion surge.

Barker 66, Akron 36
Mitch Luckman scored 17, Jacob Haight 16 and Bryce Moeller 12 to spark Barker past Akron 66-36.

Hayden Gooding added 6 and Christopher Sweeney 5 for the Raiders which go to 12-0 overall on the season.

Barker took charge at the outset jumping out to a 23-9 first quarter lead as Luckman and Haight both scored 7.

The Raiders boosted the lead to 35-17 at the half and then broke the contest wide open in the third period with a 21-4 scoring burst. Moeller netted 8 during that stretch which vaulted the Raiders out to a 56-21 advantage.

Newfane 59, CSAT 51
Josh Kneeland had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Sean Costello 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead Newfane past CSAT 59-51.
