A fast start and a strong finish combined to earn Medina a 10-5 victory over host rival Albion this afternoon in a Niagara-Orleans League baseball game.

Medina scored three quick runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run single by Matt Saj. The Mustangs later put a lock on the win by erupting for four runs in the seventh inning capped off by a three-run triple by AJ Seefeldt.

Chris Goyette picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs yielding 6 hits with 11 strikeouts in five innings of work. Zach Fike came on to earn the save allowing no hits with 5 srikeouts over the last two innings.

An error an two walks set up Medina’s first inning scoring burst as Saj’s two-run single and a passed ball accounted for the three runs.

Albion answered right back with two runs in the home half of the first on a triple by Isaiah Callicutt but the Purple Eagles could not cross home plate again until the fifth inning.

In between, the Mustangs increased their lead to 6-2 by scoring twice in the third on a fielders choice play and a steal of home after two walks and a bunt single by Saj had loaded the based. A base loaded walk then accounted for a single tally in the top of the fifth.

Albion did close the gap to 6-5 by scoring three times in the home half of the fifth on a triple by Liam Ward, a wild pitch and a double by Thomas Furmanski.

However, the Purple Eagles left a runner stranded in scoring position as Goyette registered a clutch inning ending strikeout.

Fike then came on in relief and put Albion down in order in the sixth and allowed only one baserunner in the seventh registering three strikeouts.

Medina, which left the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, did capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity in the seventh in a big way by scoring four times on an RBI sacrifice fly by Brian Fry and a three-run triple by Seefeldt. An error, a double by Joe Cecchini and a hit batter loaded the bases to set up the opportunity.

Medina, which is now 2-0 in N-O action, next hosts Newfane at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

Albion, which is 1-1, visits Akron on Friday.

Akron (1-1) defeated Barker (0-2) 13-3 this afternoon as Mitch Holtz allowed 3 hits and struck out 11 in five innings of work on the mound. At the plate for the Tigers, Brandon Orr had 3 hits, including a two-run homer.

The Roy-Hart vs. Newfane game was postponed.
