Mustangs have youthful track squads

The accent is on youth for the Medina boys and girls track teams as the Mustangs prep for the Niagara-Orleans League opener at Wilson next Tuesday (April 22).
Both teams have slightly lager numbers his season but both are dominated by underclassmen. The boys team has 19 of its 26 members in grades 7-10 while the girls squad has 21 of 27 members in grades 7-10.
Senior Gordon Young and freshman Jonathan Dix head the veteran group for the Mustangs boys squad. Young won the High Hurdles at the N-O All-League meet and went om to place second at he Section VI state qualifier and 7th at the state meet. Dix competes in the Pole Vault.
The Mustangs other returnees who had top 10 finishes at the All-League meet including seniors Ryder Jones (400 Hurdles) and Riley Tompkins (800); junior Hunter Walczak (800); sophomores Aleks Seefeldt (1600), Cole Hughes (3200), Colvin Poole (110 Hurdles) and Brandon Brueckner (Pole Vault); freshmen Owen Sargent (200) and Roman Maksimchuk (400 Hurdles) and 8th grader Jude Lacy (100).
Juniors Penelope Schalck, who placed second in the Pentathlon at the All-League meet, and Aurora Owczarczak, who placed third in the 200 and 4th in the 100, head the veterans group for the Medina girls team.
The Mustangs other returnees who had top 10 finishes at the All-League meet include the team’s only senior Madelyn Lewis (110 Hurdles, Triple Jump), juniors Emilana Batista (High Jump. 400) and Rhoswyn Oakes (400 Hurdles) and 8th grader Cayla Seever (100 Hurdles).
Alex Klinzing is the only other junior on the team while Maya Anderson, Madeline Mark and Saniyyaha Wilson are the only sophomores.
The Mustangs home opener will be April 24 against Roy-Hart.
