Mustangs edge past Wildcats in B2 opener
Two long touchdown runs by quarterback Izaiah Rhim, along with a pair of extra point kicks by Matt Hess, provided just enough offense as Medina/Lyndonville/Barker came from behind twice to edge past Depew 14-12 this evening in the B2 Division season opener at Vets Park.
Depew jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as quarterback Joe Pagano scored on a two-yard run just 2:22 into the first quarter.
However, the Mustangs battled back to take a 7-6 lead as Rhim scored on a 58 yard run in the opening minute of the second quarter and Hess tacked on the all important extra point.
The Wildcats capitalized on a botched Mustangs punt attempt to regain a 12-7 lead on a 7 yard touchdown run by Alex Neu late in the second quarter.
The Mustangs though again rebounded to retake the lead for good at 14-12 on a 53 yard touchdown run by Rhim with 7:37 to go in the fourth quarter. Hess again added the extra point kick.
The Mustangs defense then came up with a big stop forcing a Depew punt and the offense did the rest running on all but the last 48 seconds. A big 38 yard run by Brian Fry down to the Wildcats 5 yard line highlighted that late drive which stalled out on downs at the Depew 1 after a pair of 5 yard penalties stymied the advance.
Medina next visits Springville next Friday night.
