A huge return of the opening kickoff set up a short touchdown run less than a minute into the game igniting Medina to a 44-7 victory over Wilson this evening in a season ending interdivisional game at Vets Park.

Kyle Barna returned the opening kickoff 70 yards. Two plays later Dan Brown scored on a 5 yard run and quarterback Jason Hellwig hooked up with Barna for the two point conversion and the Mustangs were off and rolling.

The Mustangs quickly made it 16-0 on their next possession as Barna ran 24 yards for the touchdown and two players up from the JV ranks for the game added the two-point conversion on a pass from quarterback Tyler Valley to Tyler Howard.

A pass interception by Ty Hrovat in the Medina end zone, which he returned to the 32, set up the Mustangs scoring drive.

Wilson did cut the deficit to 16-7 at the outset of the second quarter on a 2 yard touchdown run by quarterback Tim Walck and an extra point kick by Dan Myrto. A long 58 yard run by Walck on a quarterback sneak down to the Medina 5 set up the tally.

However, the Mustangs got that one back with interest by scoring twice in the last two minutes of the half.

First, Barna broke loose for a big 56 yard touchdown run and then Brett Pecoraro scored on a 2 yard TD carry as time expired. Eric Neace added the two-point conversion run boosting the Mustangs advantage to 30-7 at the half. A 27 yard pass completion from Valley to Hrovat to the Wilson 2 set up the score.

The Mustangs closed out the contest with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns on runs of 1 yard by Hrovat and 3 yards by Pecoraro. Howard added the two-point conversion carry after Hrovat’s TD.

Runs of 23 and 14 by Pecoraro, and of 16 by both Barna and Howard highlighted the first scoring drive.

Two more players brought up from the JV ranks helped key the final scoring drive as Charlie Enderby had a 21 yard run and Gage Grabowski caught a 15 yard pass from Valley.

Two linemen, Nate Hodgins and Josh Cuadrado also had an opportunity to lug the pigskin on the final scoring drive which also saw Neace chip in with a 12 yard run and Valley a 10 yard pickup.

“It was a fortunate opportunity for us to get the game with Wilson after the sectional loss,” said Medina coach Eric Valley. ” Wilson is in a bit of a rebuilding season and we were a little banged up so we pulled up a bunch of JV players and everyone got to play. It was nice as our seniors went out on a winning note and our younger guys got some great varsity experience.”

With the win Medina finishes the season at 5-4.
