Mustangs posts key win over front-running Rams as Fike hurls a no hitter
Sparked by the sparkling no hit pitching effort of Zach Fike, Medina knocked Roy-Hart from the ranks of the unbeaten by a 9-0 score at Gasport this afternoon to move back into the thick of the Niagara-Orleans League title race.
In notching the no hitter, Fike registered 16 strikeouts including at least two in each inning as the Mustangs avenged a 2-1 loss to the Rams on Wednesday.
Improving to 6-2, Medina now pulls to within a half game of front-running Roy-Hart which is now 6-1.
The Mustangs scored the only run they would need as it turned out in the first inning as Xander Payne led off with a double and came home on a fielders choice play off the bat of Julian Woodworth.
Medina later broke the contest wide open by exploding for six runs in the fifth inning.
A leadoff single by Hayden Woodroe, a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Kroening and a single by Payne ignited that decisive uprising.
Woodworth then started the scoring spree with a two-run single. Fike followed up with a single and an error plated the third run of the frame.
Keeping the momentum, Aidan Paul followed up with an RBI single and Joe Cecchini a run producing triple as a wild pitch plated the final run.
Medina tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning as Payne led off with a triple and came home on a wild pitch and Paul banged out an RBI single.
Payne and Paul both finished with 3 hits and Woodroe 2.
Medina next travels to Wilson and Roy-Hart visits Barker on Monday.
