Mustangs complete win over Rams
It started in the snow and rain on Wednesday and ended in the sun this afternoon as undefeated Medina completed a 7-1 victory over Roy-Hart at Vets Park to maintain a two game lead atop the Niagara-Orleans League baseball standings at 6-0.
Interestingly, neither team could score under sunny skies this afternoon as all of the runs came during a snowy first inning on Wednesday.
Roy-Hart grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI triple by Al Xapsos.
Medina though answered right back with a huge seven run uprising in the home half of the first highlighted by two-run singles by Kyle Herman and Brennan Zinkievich. An error, a bunt single by winning pitcher Jason Hellwif and a hit batter loaded the bases to set up the threat.
Hellwig went the distance on the mound scattering 4 hits and striking out 11. He fanned 3 in the fifth inning and 2 in the sixth.
The Mustangs then got a nifty play by second baseman Izaiah Rhim in the seventh inning who made a diving catch for the final out.
The loss drops Roy-Hart to 3-4.
Medina next visits Newfane on Monday. The Panthers are currently tied for second place at 4-2 with Akron which defeated Albion 4-1 in another make-up game this afternoon.
