Mustangs complete sweep over Panthers
Completing a league opening week home and home sweep, Medina defeated Newfane 9-0 this evening in a Niagara-Orleans baseball game at Vets Park this evening.
Medina, which also scored a 13-1 win at Newfane in the N-O opener on Monday, took the lead for good with two quick runs in the first inning on a sacrifice by AJ Seefeldt and a single by Chris Goyette.
The Msutangs then broke the game open with a big six runs second inning which included an RBI double by Matt Saj and RBI singles by Nate Sherman and winning pitcher Zach Fike.
The Mustangs other run came in the fifth frame on an RBI double by Brian Fry.
Fike allowed only 1 hit and struck out 10 over the first five innings. He got out of a major jam in the first inning registering three straight clutch strikeouts after Newfane got the first two batters to second and third on a pair of errors.
Xander Payne came on to hurl the final two frames allowing 1 hit and striking out 3.
Medina is now 3-0 in the league (8-0 overall) while Newfane slips to 0-2 in N-O action.
The Mustangs next visit defending champion Roy-Hart at 4:45 p.m. Monday.
Softball
The Medina at Newfane N-O game was suspended in the top of the fifth inning due to poor field conditions.
Medina was leading 3-0 when play was halted. The contest is scheduled to be completed at Medina at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Postponements
The Albion at Akron baseball game was postponed until 2 p.m. Saturday.
Also postponed were the Holley vs. Pembroke baseball game and the Mt. Mercy vs. Roy-Hart softball game.
