Defending champion Medina/Lyndonville’s bid to repeat as Niagara-Orleans League boys soccer champions suffered a setback this afternoon as the Mustangs played to a rainy 1-1 double overtime tie at Akron.

The tie drops the Mustangs to 4-3-1 and a game and a half behind front-running Roy-Hart (6-2) with only two games remaining. The Mustangs finish the N-O season with home games agains rival Albion on Friday and against Wilson on November 5.

The tie also drops Akron to 6-2-1 and a half game behind Roy-Hart with just one game to play.

Interestingly,  Newfane, while virtually out of the title race at 4-4, will still play a major role in deciding who does claim the crown as the Panthers finish with games at Roy-Hart on Wednesday evening and at home against Akron on Saturday.

Akron jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Joseph Abrams just 10 minutes into the first half.

Medina/Lyndonville battled back to knot the contest when Casey Winiecki scored midway through the second half.

Neither team could then find the net over the final 20 minutes of regulation play or in 10 minute overtime periods as the game finished in the dark.
