Leading from wire-to-wire, Medina posted a 14-6 victory over Batavia this evening at Vets Park in the non league season opening lacrosse game.

Kyle Barna and Tyler Valley each scored four goals and Brett Pecoraro three to spearhead the Medina attack.

“It’s always good to get that first win but we made a lot of mistakes,” said Medina Coach Gordy Luthart. “You could tell it was the first game but it’s good to get the win.”

Medina jumped out to a lightning quick lead on a goal by Aaron Feltz in the opening 15 seconds.

Goals by Barna and Valley then helped up the Median lead to 3-1 after one period.

The Mustangs boosted the advantage to 5-1 midway through the second period after goals by Valley and Barna but Batavia pulled back to within 5-3 by half-time.

The Blue Devils did cut the deficit to one twice in the third period, first at 5-4 and then at 6-5, but could not pull even.

Medina regained a little breathing room at 8-5 at the three-quarter mark after Pecoraro scored twice and Andrew Wigley once.

The Mustangs finally broke the contest open as consecutive goals by Pecoraro, Valley and Barna in the first two minutes of the fourth period boosted the advantage to 11-5.

The Mustangs scoring parade was rounded out by late goals by Barna, Jake Cotter and Valley.

Medina next hosts Amherst at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Vets Park in the Class C Division opener.
