Mustang spikers outlast Lady Rams

Trailing two sets to one, Medina rallied to defeat host Roy-Hart 25-14, 22-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-14 victory this evening in a Niagara-Orleans League volleyball match.

Medina rallied to knot the match by taking the fourth set as Molley Gross had a key run of six straight points (16-21) to put the Mustangs on top to stay (16-21), a run which included three aces.

Medina quickly closed out the set as Abi Smith served up an ace for point 23 and kills by Nicole Blount and Brittany Schultz polished off the final two points.

Keeping the momentum, Medina gradually built up an 11-5 lead midway though the decisive fifth set highlighted by two kills by Schultz and one by Emma Ambrose.

The Mustangs then pulled away to a commanding 19-7 advantage as Emily Kams served up seven points in a row (13-19), a run which included two service aces and a pair of kills by Ambrose.

Kills by Gross, Schultz and Nicole Blount helped to boost the Medina lead to 24-14 and Blount followed up with an ace for the set and match winner.

Schultz finished with a total of 15 kills, Blount 14, Kams 10 and Ambrose 8.

After the teams traded wins in the first two sets, Roy-Hart grabbed a 2-1 lead by taking a 27-25 overtime victory in the third set.

Renee Koch served up points 5-9, Skyler Christopher 16-17, Malissa Maines 19-20 and Breanna Brewer 23-25 to key the Lady Rams win.

Medina improves to 5-4 and Roy-Hart slips to 2-7.

The contest was also the annual “Dig Pink, Dig Teal” Night in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awaremness Month. The teams wore Pink (Roy-Hart) and Teal (Medina) uniforms.

Akron 13-17-23

Defending champion Albion stayed perfect at 9-0 with a straight set victory over visiting Akron (3-5).

The Purple Eagles balanced attack included Kelsee Soule with 10 kills, 6 digs and 2 aces; Chanyce Powell 10 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces; Meghan Hurley 6 kills, 10 digs, 2 aces and 13 assists; Sara Millspaugh 3 kills, 4 digs and 3 aces; Aleah Foos 4 kills and 7 blocks; Liz Bentley 3 digs; Olivia Neidert 7 digs and 7 assists and Kassidy Hastings 5 digs, 3 aces and 4 assists.

Wheatland-Chili 12-25-23-16

Kendall posted a straight set Genesee Region League victory over visiting Wheatland-Chili as Sarah Pearson had 18 points, 16 assists, 7 digs and 1 kill; Katie Richardson 11 points, 8 aces and 3 digs and Chelsea Wright 11 digs, 2 aces and 2 kills.

Newfane 25-25-25
CSAT 16-13-8

Taylor McGhee had 7 kills and 5 digs, Erica Wright 5 kills and 8 digs, Vicki Harrington 6 kills and Madison Wolcott 21 points, 14 assists and 5 aces to lead the way for Newfane (6-3) in the straight set win over CSAT (0-8).
