Mustang spikers edge Lady Tigers in 5 sets

A fast start and a strong finish earned Medina a marathon five set victory over host Lyndonville in a non league volleyball match this evening.

Medina jumped out to a 2-0 lead by taking the first set 25-23 and the second 25-21.

Lyndonville had jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the opening set as Madison Davis served up points 2-5 and Jackie Mack 8-11.

Medina though battled back to take the set as Lexoni Russo scored points 4-8 (3 aces) and 23-25 (2 aces) and Kelsey Lemoi 10-13.

Lyndonville again jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the second set as Katelynn Breeze scored points 8-12 (3 aces).

However, Medina again rebound to take the set as Lemoi scored points 8-11 (2 aces), Addy Paul 14-16 (1 ace), Lorelei Sanders 18-20 (1 ace) and Sam Heschke registered an ace for the set winner.

The Lady Tigers though came battling back to tie the match at 2-2 by winning the third set 25-23 and the fourth 25-11.

Runs of three straight points by Mack (7-9 with 2 aces) and Davis (15-17 with 1 ace) highlighted the Lady Tigers third set win.

Davis then had a big run of 7 straight points (4-10) to put Lyndonville on top to stay in the fourth set at 10-4. Ashlee Stephens later added a four point run (19-22 with 2 aces) to up the Lyndonville lead to 22-9.

Keeping the momentum, Lyndonville jumped out to leads of 7-2 and 12-7 in the decisive fifth set. Ava Austin served up points 3-7 as Breeze had spiking kills to polish off 3 of them and Stephens 1.

However, Medina came rallying back to claim the win as Ki’Mani Poole registered 4 straight aces to put the Mustangs up 13-12.

A kill by Maddi Rutledge then polished off point 14 and Sanders followed up with a clutch service ace to win the set 15-13 and the match.

Poole finished with 10 aces, Russo and Lemoi 4 and Heschke and Sanders 2 each. Poole also had 4 kills and Rutledge and Heschke 3.

For the Lady Tigers, Davis had 6 kills and 2 aces, Stephens 6 kills, 3 aces and 18 assists, Elena Barry 2 aces, Mack 6 kills and 2 aces and Breeze 8 kills and 4 aces.
