Mustang cagers rally past host Raiders
Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Jason Hellwig scored a season high 29 points to lead Medina to a come-from-behind 65-54 win at Barker this evening.
Rebounding from a 16 point halftime deficit, Medina battled back to defeat host Barker 65-54 this evening to improve to 7-2 in Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball competition.
Jason Hellwig scored 25 of his season high 29 points in the second half to spearhead the Medina rally.
Justin Morgan added 16 on the night for the Mustangs as Jalin Cooper netted 10, Dylan Lewis 6 and Brennan Zinkievich and David Garrow 2 each.
Thomas Callaghan scored 16, Christopher Sweeney 12 and Nate Luckman 9 to lead Barker as Josh Mead chipped in with 7, Tristan Payne 6 and Tanner Gregoire and Kyle Secore 2 each.
Barker jumped out to a 22-11 first period lead as Sweeney scored 8 and Luckman 6.
The Raiders upped the advantage to 16, 43-27, at the half as Callaghan tallied 14 in the second period.
However, Medina came battling back putting together a big 18-4 third period scoring burst to slice the deficit to just two at 47-45. Hellwig erupted for 14 to key that uprising.
Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then outscored the Raiders 20-7 in the final period to complete the comeback victory. Hellwig tallied 11, Morgan 5 and Cooper 4 during that rally.
The loss drops Bakrer to 1-7 in N-O action.
In the other N-O games, undefeated (9-0) Wilson nipped CSAT (5-4) 57-55 as Kyle Bradley scored 23 and Akron (4-4) bested Newfane (2-7) 51-42.
