Mustang booters to host Rams in N-O finale
Two teams on a roll will meet in the Niagara-Orleans League boys soccer season finale Thursday as Medina/Lyndonville hosts Roy-Hart at 4:30 p.m. at Vets Park.
Medina/Lyndonville has won four of its last five outings including a huge 1-0 victory over previously undefeated (10-1) champion Akron Tuesday to improve to 7-2-2 in the league and 9-4-2 overall while Roy-Hart has won three in a row to go to 5-5-1 and 7-6-1 overall.
The Mustangs upended Akron on a second half goal by Steven Anderson, off an assist from James Ianni. The goal was the team leading 14th of the season for Anderson who also has 4 assists. Ianni is second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 12 assists.
The victory was Medina/Lyndonville’s first over Akron since their first meeting in the 2010 season. Ironically that 4-3 win by the Mustangs was the Tigers only N-O set back of that season.
In all, the Mustangs have had a total of 10 players contribute to the goal production so far this season as Anthony Pane has 6 goals and 6 assists, Greg Husung 3 goals and 4 assists. Medina/Lyndonville and Roy-Hart played to a 3-3 overtime tie in their earlier season meeting as Gasport.
Medina visits Barker Thursday
In a bit of a scheduling irony, Medina visits Barker at 4:30 Thursday afternoon in a Niagara-Orleans League game as the Lady Raiders look to rebound from Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at Kenmore which snapped nine year N-O unbeaten streak.
Ironically, Medina was the last team to beat Barker in N-O action before Kenmore’s win Tuesday. The Mustangs downed the Lady Raiders by a 3-1 score in the third game of the 2005 season.
Since then Barker had put together an incredible 116 N-O game unbeaten streak going 110-0-6 during that stretch until Tuesday.
Barker bounced back from the Medina loss to go 10-0-1 the rest of the 2005 season. The Lady Raiders then went 12-0-2 in 2006, 13-0-1 in both 2007 and 2008, 14-0-0 in 2009, 2010 and 2011, 11-0-1 in 2012 and 9-0 this season before Tuesday. loss to Kenmore which leaves the two teams deadlocked for the top spot at 9-1 with two games remaining.
Kenmore has home games remaining against Wilson and Akron while Barker will host Roy-Hart in the finale.
